having trouble with self-perception of different /publics again
#
tantek
I am finding myself posting a lot more photos (5-10x) to Swarm/Foursquare as a *side-effect* of checking-in, than I am to Instagram->embed->my site->POSSE->(FB,Flickr,Twitter)
#
tantek
and the thinking/feeling is, photos on Swarm/Foursquare don't "bug" people if I post "a lot" / "too many"
#
tantek
whereas I have a sense (have gotten feedback too!) that posting a lot on IG generally feels "annoying" to people

Loqi, messages?
#
tantek
and on my own site, I have this feeling of not wanting to deluge those who read my stream (whether on home page or in a /reader ) with lots of photos
#
tantek
anyway, just thought I would share this conundrum of silo-posting vs. indie-posting to see if anybody else can relate, or has insight, or has questions to ask that may help illuminate a solution
#
miklb
tantek separate photo feed?
#
tantek
miklb - excellent suggestion
#
tantek
we touched on some of this at IWC Düsseldorf /photos session
#
KevinMarks
aaronpk segments his feeds
#
tantek
looks for notes
#
tantek
KevinMarks: however pretty sure all aaronpk's photos go on his main stream
#
miklb
sorta like how people who post a lot of links offer 3 feeds, all content, original content, just links
#
tantek
dislikes the term feed since it seems to imply (certainly strongly associated with) /plumbing
#
tantek
and thus sets a default of plumbing-centric framing
#
KevinMarks
stream? feed? tab? tag? topic?
#
tantek
those are not the same type of thing
#
miklb
sorry, I see "reader" and think feed.
#
KevinMarks
known has type-filtered pages, and choices about which ones to put where
#
tantek
miklb yeah, even that is true
#
tantek
yet "reader" at least is a bit more separate than "feed reader" which basically means "Google Reader" (defunct) to many/most
mlncn joined the channel
#
KevinMarks
or rather, you can omit types
#
tantek
KevinMarks: type-filtering is not the problem
#
miklb
I also often refer to a Twitter "feed" as well, knowing the difference between Atom/RSS and general firehose of content
#
tantek
type-filtering gives you all or nothing. that's not the problem here
#
tantek
what is a feed?
#
Loqi
A feed is a dynamic set of posts, typically listed in reverse-chronological order, often only the most recent n (like 10) of them https://indiewebcamp.com/feed
#
tantek
wow photo does not have a sessions section. interesting
#

tantek: do you/would you show check-ins in your main sequential-display-of-posts?
#
KartikPrabhu
why are their GET endpoints for photo ".json" !!??
#
sknebel
Is it the fact that they are *photos* or just that they are many posts that might be annoying to readers?
#
tantek
sknebel: vast majority of my check-ins are "friends only"
#
tantek
so to answer your "would you show ... in your main ..." question, some of them, once in a while, publicly to everyone (so no noticeable difference to # of photos posted), and ...
#
Loqi
[indieweb] "IndieWeb Summit" by aaronpk http://2016.indieweb.org/
#
tantek
if/when I get a "friend-only stream/home" working, perhaps a lot more
#
sknebel
and people mostly follow you on different silos that are friends only
#
tantek
and I would also likely try to cluster my check-ins, similar to how I cluster my likes
#
tantek
in order to make my homepage not seem overwhelmed with checkins
#
tantek
sknebel: the fact that they are that many posts that might be annoying to readers

#
tantek
sknebel: that *is* a helpful observation though, I definitely self-limit on other post types due to a sense of not wanting to annoy readers with too many posts (mostly just notes & photos)
#
tantek
no problem with likes though, since I feel like I have designed a reasonable way to cluster / compress likes (at least on my homepage) so they look fine even if I post a ton of them.
#
sknebel
it seems like with posting more photos on the check-in silos you have for now different streams
#
tantek
clustering notes is harder (have no idea how to do this from a design perspective)
#
sknebel
on a homepage on could display only the last x checkins in some card-like display (or a "facepile" of the photos, but for checkins the photo is not the most important thing)
#
tantek
sknebel: maybe. the Swarm UI also has a way of not seeming overwhelming when people checkin / post photos a lot. or maybe it's my use of Swarm? there's a never a feeling of wanting to have to see every single post in Swarm
#
tantek
sknebel: right, clustering checkins could work. and definitely for checkins the photo is not the most important thing
#
tantek
also, photo posts by themselves may be clusterable
#
tantek
I feel like I've seen some UI in FB for this, where "so-and-so posted n photos" and then it shows a mini-grid/brick layout of the photos
#
tantek
what is like clustering?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "like clustering" yet. Would you like to create it? https://indiewebcamp.com/s/10LQ
#
tantek
really?
#
sknebel
there is the pattern many pages have with their twitter feeds
#
sknebel
they have their main content
#
sknebel
and then a box to the side with the last few tweets
#
sknebel
that could be done more general, with a main display of "important" things and a short current stream of more ephemeral posts
#
tantek
like clustering is a design technique for providing a summary, and inline display for a series of adjacent /like posts so that they take up much less space in the context of a /stream or /archive. See [[like#notification_first_design]] for specifics on like clustering design.

KevinMarks
facebook does that for album posts on mobile
#
tantek
sknebel: maybe. I think that separate box technique works well with "boxy" things like photos that can be laid out into a grid/brick like layout
#
tantek
but I've never seen it work well for notes
#
tantek
always felt like a design copout when used for tweets/notes

#
tantek
yes they do (mess that up)

wonders how much the "feed" terminology implies RSS to people who haven't been embedded in the tech for so long
singpolyma joined the channel
#
Ruxton
RSS is "Feed" to people not in the know "we should make an RSS Feed" "can we use atom instead? *explains*" "Oh, whatever"
#
sknebel
I'm not sure that is true anymore
#
sknebel
Feed is Facebook news feed, twitter timeline etc
#
Ruxton
good point
#
sknebel
if you remember RSS by name you are a techie
#
aaronpk
especially if you remember the differences between RSS and Atom
#

so I think feed is nowadays less plumbing and more "ordered series of posts/entries" than a few years ago

what is side-file?
#
Loqi
The sidefile-antipattern is a violation of the DRY principle by the use of secondary files (typically in some one-off XML format) to provide information that is a duplicate of information available in primary files on a website (in HTML), and is an antipattern due to typical DRY violation problems such as out-of-date, missing, corrupted, or outright false data https://indiewebcamp.com/side_file

what is meta http-equiv status
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "meta http-equiv status" yet. Would you like to create it? https://indiewebcamp.com/s/10LY
#
tantek
meta http-equiv status is an HTML extension that adds the "Status" value to the existing meta element's http-equiv attribute as a method for representing the HTTP Status code to be returned by a web server serving that HTML document, and for consuming applications to parse and interpret for such use-cases as static hosting that often disallow setting HTTP headers directly.
