welcome gyuumaou !
#
rMdes
they get free interns, subsidies and still terrible practice/methods using social media
#
gyuumaou
you'd think they would add twitter cards, can facebook's link shorteners actually support that?
#
tantek
rMdes: in particular "without any description or status text to pimp the link they are sharing" is a good critique of incompatible proprietary /link-preview approaches
#
rMdes
not sure but don't think so. i mean they could support that; but they wont..same way Twitter stopped to "embed" instagram
#
rMdes
agree tantek, just this one is easy to fix and people should know it
#
tantek
gyuumaou: the opposite. the fact that people are posting "plain" links in FB shows that those links still "look good" in FB *WITHOUT* Twitter Cards, thus it is Twitter that should adapt and implement a better /link-preview algorithm

#
Loqi
tantek meant to say: does this mean that any tweet mentioning WordPress gets retweeted a whole bunch?
#
tantek
considers testing this hypothesis
#
aaronpk
i suspect it's actually that a lot of twitter bots tweet articles from the wpmudev.org blog
#
tantek
but then the retweets!
#
aaronpk
oh yeah these are all RTs huh
#
tantek
On a FB "news feed" it shows that sort of thing as "friend1, friend2, and 56 others shared 'Trackbacks vs Pingbacks vs Webmentions for WordPress' (link)"
#
tantek
That is, FB's "reader" has decent clustering code.
#
tantek
I wonder when mentions of Webmentions will pass mentions of IndieWeb (more than just a 24hr period) on Twitter
#
rMdes
tantek, with roundteam it's easy to replicate this behavior, and i think a lot of twitter account just react on other tweets if "x" is mentioned even if it's part of a word: like "Broadcasting", a twitter bot would RT if instructed to RT "broadcast" - I just hope twitter management services are in their infancy because it's easy to get fooled by words
#
tantek
(it may already be happening for week or month just from this and the W3C related tweets)
#
gyuumaou
has anyone here POSSE'd up their content to pinterest? im passively working on a tool thats pinterest-but-not (no social cruft) and im wondering if theres a seamless way to integrate
#
tantek
sounds pretty interesting
#
tantek
what is Pinterest?
#
Loqi
Pinterest is a visual bookmark hosting silo where users "pin" (bookmark), or "repin" (repost a bookmark of) a page with a specific image from that page to a "pinboard" (named bookmark collection) and follow other users and/or pinboards created by others https://indiewebcamp.com/Pinterest
#
rMdes
one of my twitter bots got fooled on #aprilfools, because someone I usually trust, made a joke about the ECB (european central bank) this managed to get through my filters & got RT, if twitter is to survive the bot invasion, it needs to give much better and granular control over what can/should bot do...but then it would become a control freak & people would move their bot away ? anyway..

#
gyuumaou
the design is a bit different, however; you dont create boards but instead tag your posts, then search/boolean search so your posts can effectively be in multiple boards

that sounds like a tagging silo in general like pinboard
#

wow i'm pretty disappointed with apple's support for ics
#
tantek
aaronpk: tried to warn you
#
aaronpk
aha i think i've figured out the lowest common denominator
#
aaronpk
apple understands named timezones, but not timezone offsets
#
aaronpk
so DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20160620T120000 works, but DTSTART;TZID="-04:00":20160620T120000 and DTSTART:20160620T120000-0400 do not
#
aaronpk
so much for iso8601
#
aaronpk
it completely ignored the event with the time "2016-06-20T08:00:00Z"
#
rMdes
good stuff there in spanish...it's alwxays good when new ideas go to spain, they tend to get adopted in some way to my experience

aaronpk: the RFC seems pretty clear on that fact: “The form of date and time with UTC offset MUST NOT be used. For
#
Zegnat
example, the following is not valid for a DATE-TIME value: 19980119T230000-0800”
#
aaronpk
huh interesting
#
aaronpk
well the TZID with numeric offset should still work
#
tantek
yes they should
#
aaronpk
google understands them but apple does not
#
tantek
what is TZID?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "TZID" yet. Would you like to create it? https://indiewebcamp.com/s/10HM
#
Zegnat
Reading the iCalendar RFC (5545) I am confused as to why they did not just take ISO 8691 :/
#
tantek
like I said, rabbithole!
#
aaronpk
TZID is an attribute of date fields in the [[ICS]] format that is used to indicate the timezone name or offset of the date. e.g. "DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Paris:20160418T140000"
#
loqi.me
created /TZID (+199) "prompted by tantek https://indiewebcamp.com/irc/2016-04-03/line/1459702800039 and dfn added by aaronpk"
(view diff)
#
Zegnat
E.g. for duration they except D (days), W (weeks) and then specifically state they do not support (M) month and Y (year). No reason for it. Just “Note that unlike [ISO.8601.2004],”
#
aaronpk
wow, I can't even best-guess at the timezone name given just an offset because I need to know the actual location in order to know whether the offset is in DST or not
#
tantek
Zegnat: subsetting from specs makes sense to simplify implementations and increase chance of interop
#
tantek
e.g. for durations in particular, months and years require LOTS more code than "just" days / weeks
#
aaronpk
Pacific time switches between -0800 and -0700, and Mountain time switches between -0700 and -0600, so if a timestamp has just -0700 then there's no way to know whether it's Pacific or Mountain
#
Zegnat
I guess that is true, tantek. But it still feels a little random when just reading the RFC. You get the feeling they are subsetting for no real reason other than reimplementing standards we already have.
#
tantek
aaronpk: or Arizona ;)
#
aaronpk
that's probably a better example since they don't do DST
#
tantek
(no DST)
#
tantek
point being, -0700 ~ PDT/Arizona/MST
#
aaronpk
and of course ISO8601 doesn't provide a mechanism to include a timezone name, only an offset
snarfed joined the channel
#
aaronpk
so I can't even store a proper timestamp without adding a separate field for the timezone name
#
tantek
no, just don't confuse timestamp with location and you're fine
#
tantek
notes ICS has LOCATION, which is where hCalendar and h-event got it ;)
#
aaronpk
the problem is apple doesn't handle a numeric timezone, so the events show up wrong
#
aaronpk
i have to give it a named timezone for it to work
#
aaronpk
but I don't *store* named timezone in my site (because there is no way to do that in iso8601)
#
Zegnat
Interesting, the RFC does not specify a naming convention for TZID at all. I wonder if Apple has documented what Calendar accepts somewhere else.
#
tantek
aaronpk: no the answer is to always use UTC / Z in ICS as the LCD
#
tantek
then both gcal and apple ical will get it right
#
aaronpk
oh yeah I didn't add that test case yet
#
tantek
(this is what x2v / h2vx does)
#
aaronpk
let's see if apple understands TZID=UTC
#
tantek
(which is all open source btw, feel free to check it out instead of rediscovering ;) )
#
Zegnat
I don’t think they will, aaronpk. If you set the datetime with a Z at the end you are not allowed to define a TZID at all
#
Zegnat
According to RFC
#
tantek
right, no need for TZID when you Z
#
Zegnat
“The "TZID" property parameter MUST NOT be applied to DATE properties and DATE-TIME or TIME properties whose time values are specified in UTC.”
#
aaronpk
apple ignored the event when the dtsart was "DTSTART:20160620T160000Z"
#
Zegnat
That is … weird. That sounds correct
#
aaronpk
I can't use the "floating" time "DTSTART:20160620T160000" because that would cause it to appear wrong when my phone is set to a different timezone than the event
#
tantek
no no the UTC should be working
#
aaronpk
the spec says "DTSTART:20160620T160000Z" is valid
#
tantek
which validator are you using for that ? ;)
#
Zegnat
yeah, it should be valid o.O
#
aaronpk
validator?
#
aaronpk
i'm reading the spec, implementing it, then looking at how it is imported by my iphone

well the good news is I now have my travel/events showing up on my phone with the correct duration and time slots
#
aaronpk
the bad news is iOS no longer knows the local time of the event, so it just shows the summary as "from 12:25 am to 3:50 am" rather than the local times in each timezone "7:25 am to 12:50 pm"
#
aaronpk
when the phone knows the different start/end timezones, it actually displays it well

as a workaround, I put the local times in the ICS description field so that I know what it actually means

they do from google calendar to iOS yes

the only problem is that iOS doesn't interpret TZID=-07:00 properly, it only handles TZID=America/Los_Angeles. Other than that, everything works fine.

aaronpk: yeah "log out" just clears the acct bookmark links at the top
#
aaronpk
tantek: you didn't already have a rel-me link to instagram on your site?
#
snarfed
(there's no "logged in" apart from that :P)
#
tantek
aaronpk: I removed it in the great filtering out a few weeks ago.
#
snarfed
thanks for the QA tantek!
#
tantek
snarfed: of course! happy to canary
#
snarfed
so the safari bug is that it doesn't enforce url scheme in input type="url" ?
#
aaronpk
i can't actually reproduce that error
#
aaronpk
i was able to log in with "aaronparecki.com" "http://aaronparecki.com" and "https://aaronparecki.com/"
#
tantek
snarfed - yeah it didn't seem to
#
tantek
form still submitted
#
tantek
followed by the 500
#
tantek
snarfed, if you care to extract, I'm using <input type="url"> in a friendlier way on tantek.com/relmeauth that automatically prepends the http:// before the browser has a chance to complain that the thing is not a URL
#
snarfed
should have depended on type=url
#
aaronpk
oh, in safari it gets shows that 500 error before it even redirects to indieauth.com
#
snarfed
tantek: thanks! i might
#
aaronpk
s/gets //
#
Loqi
aaronpk meant to say: oh, in safari it shows that 500 error before it even redirects to indieauth.com
#
tantek
does his monthly manual update of his upcoming events box yet again
#
tantek
awwww: "Your Instagram account is private. Bridgy only supports public accounts." - though I suppose that is "works as specifed/promised" ;) snarfed
#
snarfed
lol yes sorry tantek
#
snarfed
glad it's working!
#
snarfed
(the check)
#
tantek
haha yes at least I helped verify that :)
#
snarfed
technically your account is still live though, grandfathered in!
#
tantek
oh really? how? even though I tried to reconnect to it?
#
tantek
so it's getting scraped or no?
#
snarfed
expected behavior there isn't exactly clear
#
snarfed
sure, it is, https://brid.gy/instagram/tantek , but it'll never send a wm
#
tantek
I don't think it ever has
#
tantek
(even when public)
#
snarfed
since you went private? hopefully not
#
snarfed
oh? oh since you don't have IG synd urls?
#
snarfed
true then
#
tantek
no I have them
#
snarfed
oh? then that would have been a bad bug...?
#
snarfed
ok, login without url scheme bug is fixed
#
tantek
yes, for quite some time. view-source:http://tantek.com/ - first instance of "u-syndication" for example
#
Loqi
Tantek Çelik
#
tantek
yes Loqi?
#
Loqi
who, me?
#
snarfed
tantek do you remember when you went private?
#
tantek
Loqi, no, who is on first
#
tantek
snarfed, pretty sure I posted about it
#
snarfed
looks like bridgy sent you plenty of instagram wms before then. eg https://brid.gy/instagram/tantek?responses_before=2016-03-01T15:59:57.628490#responses
#
snarfed
(phew)
#
Loqi
[Tantek Çelik] Going Silo-Private to Prefer the IndieWeb, Leave Silo Publics, and Pioneer Privacy on the Independent Web
#
tantek
oh so that did get fixed then!
#
tantek
I wonder what happens if I toggle public then poll
#
snarfed
i don't remember the bug, but evidently yes
#
snarfed
sure that should work
#
tantek
interesting
#
tantek
does the IG API allow for programmatic switching of pubic/priate profile?
#
snarfed
oh god no
#
tantek
snarfed: check out https://brid.gy/instagram/tantek now - notice "No webmention targets"
#
snarfed
and even if it did, you couldn't use it after they lock it down in a couple mos anyway :/
#
snarfed
k looking
#
tantek
guess I'll try another website crawl but it should have caught all the syndication links for all but the latest photo
#
snarfed
trying to remember if your site was unusual and bridgy didn't follow its permalinks to find synd urls. not sure.
#
snarfed
aha, no, it found them fine. (looked at a log.) the problem is instagram photo permalinks are different when public vs private
#
tantek
shouldn't have to - the IG synd URLs for my photos are on my home page stream also
#
tantek
whoa what
#
snarfed
yes. private ones are way longer.
#
snarfed
hmm maybe that's only for when they're created?
#
tantek
and they don't redirect?!?
#
snarfed
no, IG doesn't change them when you toggle. so, i'm still not sure.
#
tantek
weird
#
tantek
maybe they post them to different servers depending on if your account is public or private at the time
#
snarfed
ohhhh it may be the IG permalinks' ?taken-by=... query param
#
tantek
wait - like it needs to be there? or needs to not be there?
#
tantek
which should I be doing?
#
tantek
(happy to clean up my links)
#
snarfed
neither. bridgy should handle it.
#
snarfed
still not sure that's the cause. i'll keep looking.
#
tantek
ok - I'll leave the account public for a bit to see if you can track it down
#
snarfed
i think it is that after all
#
tantek
I was wondering why the permalinks got longer
#
tantek
hey snarfed, the public permalink is a truncation of the private one!
#
snarfed
interesting!
#
tantek
(ignoring take-by param)
#
snarfed
probably always true
#
tantek
probably yeah
#
snarfed
yeah bridgy was ignoring the query params after all
#
tantek
I'm going to go truncate a bunch of links by hand and see if I break anything >:D
Gold and snarfed1 joined the channel
#
tantek
snarfed, looks like it worked!
#
tantek
11 character IDs
#
snarfed1
tantek: yay!
#
tantek
so heck, you could truncate and compare in Bridgy ;)
#
snarfed
yes we could
#
snarfed
this is a pretty unusual use case, but true
#
tantek
trying a bridgy recrawl...
#
snarfed
woo sending
#
snarfed
if only we saw them on your site! :P
#
tantek
I know I know :(
#
tantek
the manual event updating stuff is definitely grating on me
#
snarfed
whispers "drop the per-event wiki pages!" :P
#
tantek
wasn't even referring to THAT manual event updated ;(
#
tantek
s/updated/updating
#
Loqi
tantek meant to say: wasn't even referring to THAT manual event updating ;(
#
tantek
(the upcoming events box on my home page)
#
tantek
that's the itch -> motivates me to support event posts -> motivates me to support receiving & showing RSVPs -> motivates me to show received webmentions
#
tantek
ok looks like with the truncated URLs, bridgy found the IG posts and sent a bunch of webmentions!
#
tantek
ah, except for the ones that scrolled off my home page
#
tantek
I can hack that temprorarily
#
snarfed
are you thinking of leaving your acct public now?
#
tantek
no, I can just toggle and recrawl as needed ;)
#
snarfed
wow, ok
#
tantek
hmm - found "No webmention targets" instance
#
tantek
"Good morning Boston! That’s more like ... "
#
tantek
which is currently on my site as https://www.instagram.com/p/BDN1_hjA9fw
#
tantek
does that matter? trailing slash or not? didn't seem to for the other links (I left off the trailing slash on nearly all the others and Bridgy found them)
#
snarfed
generally shouldn't matter
#
snarfed
i'll look
#
snarfed
oh it probably just stopped there
#
snarfed
when it crawls and finds new synd links, it resends old responses up to a point, but not back in time forever
#
tantek
oh darn
#
snarfed
retry button should do it
#
snarfed
should have sent at least a few dozen hopefully
#
tantek
I think it did!
#
tantek
clicks a bunch of retry buttons
#
tantek
oh weird it doesn't retry all the webmentions for that permalink
#
tantek
just literally one favorite/like at a time
#
tantek
that doesn't make sense, if it finds a new webmention target for a permalink where it didn't find one before, shouldn't it reprocess *all* the "No webmention targets" found errors for that permalink?
#
snarfed
ideally yes. good feature request
#
snarfed
just difficult internally
#
tantek
I don't even know how to file that
#
tantek
uses a :thumb-up: for the first time on GitHub
#
snarfed
reacgitji
#
tantek
reactjigit
#
tantek
themesong: get jigit with it
#
tantek
feels like he's playing webmention-clicker
#
tantek
is worried there are hundreds of these
#
snarfed
there probably are!
#
snarfed
and the UI doesn't make it easy to retry lots at once :/
#
tantek
tries clicking lots of retries before the browser can reload
#
tantek
hey that works!
#
tantek
uh more No webmention targets
snarfed1 joined the channel
#
tantek
snarfed: found another one (have retried a few times)
#
tantek
oh no wait
#
tantek
Bridgy has the private long permalink
#
tantek
what the
#
tantek
ok now I want the unusual feature request
#
Loqi
gives tantek the unusual feature request
#
tantek
truncate long Instagram permalinks at 11 char IDs
#
tantek
gives Loqi a GitHub issue to fix
#
Loqi
peers at the GitHub issue to fix
#
tantek
Darn, he's getting smarter all the time
#
tantek
snarfed, ok, truncate IG permalinks request filed https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy/issues/641
#
tantek
applies to first 3+ pages of https://brid.gy/instagram/tantek
#
snarfed1
thanks for filing!
#
tantek
weird - now it can't seem to find https://www.instagram.com/p/BDN1_hjA9fw
#
snarfed
will look
#
tantek
"Good morning Boston! That’s more like ... " ... "No webmention targets"
#
tantek
but it's definitely linked from my home page
#
snarfed
bridy only crawls the first 10 permalinks in any feed
#
snarfed
since it recrawls every 4h
#
tantek
considers another evil hack
#
snarfed
sorry; the use case here - changing old posts - is getting farther and farther away from expected :P
#
tantek
sure, was just trying to test the permalink equivalence
#
snarfed
tantek: as an alternative, you can add synd links inside the feed. bridgy will find and use all of those.
#
tantek
they are all in my home page feed
#
tantek
wait do you mean the Atom feed?
#
snarfed
no, home page
#
tantek
it's on my home page
#
snarfed
then not sure
#
tantek
hence the report
#
tantek
snarfed, is there anything else I can do to help debug the top "No webmention targets" error in https://brid.gy/instagram/tantek#responses ?
#
tantek
needs help with posting an indie event and FB POSSE copy for https://indiewebcamp.com/events/2016-04-06-homebrew-website-club
#
tantek
!tell benwerd, kylewm,KevinMarks could you post an indie event and FB POSSE copy for https://indiewebcamp.com/events/2016-04-06-homebrew-website-club#San_Francisco and update the page there? Thanks much!
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
tantek
!tell adactio is Brighton HWC on this week? assuming not due to AEA Seattle. https://indiewebcamp.com/events/2016-04-06-homebrew-website-club#Where
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell him that when I see him next
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

!tell shaners, cleverdevil did you two figure out HWC Los Angeles for this week? https://indiewebcamp.com/events/2016-04-06-homebrew-website-club#Where
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
snarfed
tantek: not right now. thank you though!
#
tantek
snarfed, ok, I'll leave my account public for a few more hours at least to help with the debugging
