noticing that FB events seem to have lost the separate "regrets" or "Post why you can't go" page / thread
#
tantek
which now has the (unintended?) effect that many of the events I see have tons of recent comments which are all "sorry I can't go" which then puts a downer on the event as a whole
#
tantek
especially since *everybody* gets notified for every new comment - checks it - just to see that it's another person declining
#
tantek
and since people are social animals, seeing lots of other people post that they can't go makes you not want to go
#
tantek
knowing all this, instead of posting a "Sorry I can't make it" comment on the event (which appears to show that you publicly care, but actually hurts the overall social dynamic of the event), the better thing to do is to privately message host(s) that you can't go.

#
[snarfed]
tantek: sure! i can do that to
#
tantek
snarfed, it would be a useful exercise for us to *attempt* to do siloA indieB indieC where siloA is Facebook, or Instagram, or even Twitter, and then document the roadblocks
#
[snarfed]
i think we'll actually have to (pick one) due to limited API support
#
tantek
snarfed, yeah, of course we'll have to pick one, I'm just saying we try them one at a time, document if/when we get stuck, then try the next one
#
tantek
that documentation will help us with going to contacts at various silos and asking for more support
#
tantek
snarfed, another SWAT0 variant that involves silos that could be useful is one that uses silos as posting apps, that is PESOS e.g. with OwnYourGram
#
[snarfed]
based on the cataloging links i mentioned, we can already tell which silos support which participants
#
[snarfed]
i think i mentioned PESOS. hopefully the writeup supports it too
#

I do think the PESOS vs silo-native use-cases are different and each valuable

[tantek]
GWG, tutorial content first (I suggest wiki it to start with), when there's enough to merit a separate site, you can worry about naming then
#
[tantek]
Naming questions are more often than not a distraction, because it's easier to debate a name for a thing than to actually get to building it.
#
[tantek]
So instead, build it first.
#
GWG
My ultimate dream is to get more people in the Wordpress community involved.
#
[tantek]
Hey that's a great suggestion for something to put on our User: pages - "Ultimate Dream" section.
#

snarfed: I'm trying to practice daily (optimism) :)
#
GWG
Under a picture of Don Quixote?
#
GWG
Petermolnar, ideas on that?
#
[tantek]
GWG, the best way to get more people involved is to be the best example yourself that you can be. Which you're doing bit by bit - eg notifications this past weekend.
#
[tantek]
Perhaps blog about what you got working with notifications from WordPress, and show screenshots from your blog and phone of receiving the notifications!
#
petermolnar
I've been thinking of that for 2 years now and couldn't even get on board programmer friends who already has ~self-hosted WP sites
#
petermolnar
(that was a re: to GWG)
#
[tantek]
GWG, petermolnar I also suggest focusing on just getting 1-2 more people involved, perhaps your closest ties in that community. That kind of personal focused positive attention usually is quite effective.
#
GWG
I keep trying new approaches
#
[tantek]
And you'll likely learn about their frustrations and roadblocks too.
#
[tantek]
Which are important to document.
#
petermolnar
sure, the problem is more that I can't get them motivated in it
#
[tantek]

Petermolnar have you asked them what their goals are with their current self hosted sites?
#
petermolnar
I did; 99% of the cases the sites are secondary, there are additional social networks and they are not willing to 'give up the conform'
#
GWG
That was why I was thinking about a document that played up the positives
#
GWG
How do we wow people?
#
[tantek]
GWG the answer to that is simple: with beautiful visual design and UX on your own site.
#
petermolnar
we don't, I think
#
[tantek]
Implementing that is the hard part.
#
petermolnar
"beautiful design" is the "web 2.0" of 2015
#
[tantek]
Disagree. Beautiful design is specific enough to be actionable.
#
[tantek]
It's just harder than arguing about APIs and formats and plumbing.
#
[tantek]
But it's the key to wowing people.
#
petermolnar
about the wowing: https://medium.com/@tylrfishr/im-22-years-old-and-what-is-this-d73c2573c254 - this keeps popping up in my mind when I'm trying to come up with anything to wow people who joined the internet in the post-social-networks era

There's lots that is actionable in that article petermolnar.

I challenge you to distill it to a short list of positive action points for the indieweb community.
#
aaronpk
"Iā€™m not sure simply reverting back to what we had is the right path if we want to include people who have never experienced the open web or understand its principles."
#
aaronpk
I think that hits close to the indieweb principles
#
petermolnar
heh, just a thought: Snapchat replacement - ephemeral private webmentions, once crawled by the corresponding target, the post gets deleted
#
aaronpk
snapmention
#
aaronpk
heck you could probably do that reasonably safely with just long token URLs and no actual identity or authentication
#
petermolnar
would need https though on both sides

trying out willnorris's imageproxy tool, it uses urls like https://kylewm.com/imageproxy/http://example.com/image.jpg, and i'm having a bit of trouble with nginx rewrite converting the double slash to a single slash (http://example.com to http:/example.com)
#
kylewm
any ideas how to get around that, other than setting merge_slashes off; for the whole server?
#
aaronpk
can you make it take the image URL in the query string instead so that you can urlencode it?
#
kylewm
yes, but i would have to learn go :/
#
kylewm
i suppose i could urlencode the url even if it isn't in a query param right?

[snarfed]
ooh, instead of learning go, kylewm want to work on silo swat0 with me? :P
#
[snarfed]
all we need us a few more Facebook or Flickr features in bridgy
#
kylewm
but i'm busy moving around deck chairs!
#
kylewm
goes to look at what flickr stuff is needed

@snarfed how can I help? I'm just a little bit lost between mentions/tags/responses to tags
#
[snarfed]
if we say B is the silo only participant, for FB, i think we only need publish person tags
#
[snarfed]
for Flickr, we need publish posts, comments, person tags, and also feeds for readers
#
kylewm
thankfully flickr provides its own rss/atom feeds https://www.flickr.com/services/feeds/
#
[snarfed]
yeah i figured
#
[snarfed]
so Flickr would be more work, but people have already asked for Flickr publish support anyway
#
[snarfed]
i could do fb if you want to try some of Flickr
#
kylewm
sure, I'm not opposed to adding it
#
[snarfed]
or whatever
#
kylewm
we need a new path through granary to find posts that tag a person?
#
[snarfed]
nah we skip the person tag/mention stuff if B is the solo only participant
#
[snarfed]
i *think*
#
[snarfed]
er silo
#
kylewm
fun problem to try and figure out the silo user_id from the personal URL

#
kylewm
hrm, don't you need those to verify your domain on startssl?
#
aaronpk
nope! they do a whois lookup and will send to any domain in the list
#
kylewm
thought i remembered having to set up webmaster@kylewm.com to verify my identity
#
aaronpk
so you can have whatev@gmail.com listed as one of the contacts of kylewm.com if you want
#
kylewm
oh interesting
#
aaronpk
yeah that was also my assumption, but then I realized they actually do a whois lookup!
#
kylewm
were you emailing yourself error logs from your apps?
#
kylewm
(context: i realized that that has stopped working for my site recently and don't want to fix it)
#
[snarfed]
they have lots of verification options
