#

probably not if he's using the api
#

my guess is that their RSS feeds still work
#
tantek
so assuming you can still curl those, you should be ok
#

it's api afaik

E.g. code-of-conduct, noticing that FB notifications had an RSS feed (URL security through obscurity), Events itch scratching, Known Pro, etc.? http://indiewebcamp.com/irc/2015-03-13/line/1426294801107
#

Archive.org doesn't copy images anyway, do they?
#
tantek
yes they do
#
tantek
that's why you can see very old home pages of companies with their logos etc.

Hm. Wonder if that's newer. I've seen archive.org captures that were mainly text, since the images no longer exist online.

i just had this crazy idea for Monocle
#
aaronpk
based on yesterday and today's issues i've been having with my IRC client
#
aaronpk
I want to use Monocle to replace my use of my terminal-based IRC client
#
aaronpk
half of what I use IRC for anyway is a reader of various feeds, mostly twitter searches
#
aaronpk
based on my work on the slack-irc and web-irc bridge, I feel like it's not a huge stretch to turn Monocle into an IRC client too
#
tantek
and there's that POSSE to IRC Known plugin also
#
tantek
could even do some of this semi-automatically based on content hints, e.g. I would like to post a note, with the #indiewebcamp hashtag (maybe even starting a note with #indiewebcamp) and then have Falcon automatically know to POSSE it to IRC and NOT to Twitter.
#
tantek
then I could just post #indiewebcamp notes on my site, and have them go to IRC automatically without gumming up my tweets with all of them
#
tantek
from a client perspective, I would treat the #indiewebcamp hashtag prefixing as just picking a primary topic to post about / in
#

I use IRC to log things, so like my system that sets the electronic door code will log to IRC that it happened, but that system doesn't have a URL of its own
#
tantek
private logs?
#
aaronpk
so either I could make a super simple micropub+microformats blog that actually stores this stuff and monocle can subscribe to *that*, or monocle could have a way to have outside things write to it
#
aaronpk
the other thing I need to figure out first is re IRC... would using monocle as my IRC client mean that everything I type in IRC is also posted to my site?
#
aaronpk
but then what about things other people say in IRC?
#
snarfed
honestly i'm a bit skeptical about this kind of thing
#
aaronpk
what kind of thing?
#
tantek
aaronpk, I see snarfed's point. I mean what are you going to do about the diametric opposition between IRC timeline (most recent at bottom), and classic "feed" reader timeline (most recent at top) ?!?
#
snarfed
some things have such different and specialized UXes - for good reason - that it may not work very well to try to force a fit
#
snarfed
even if there is some overlap
#
aaronpk
i guess what i'm saying is that I currently use IRC for some very unconventional non-IRC things
#
aaronpk
really I just want to port what I currently use IRC for to the web
#
tantek
ah, so you mean IRC as plumbing, not IRC as UI
#
snarfed
now that makes more sense
#
snarfed
(even apart from irc specifically, i get that we want to do lots of things from our own web sites, and that's great for many of them, but it doesn't mean we have to try to do *all* of them that way)
#
aaronpk
not even using IRC as plumbing
#
aaronpk
a lot of this doesn't *need* to be irc, irc was just a convenient realtime mechanism I had available when I set up the thing
#
snarfed
you want to get *away* from IRC as plumbing, toward web as plumbing
#
tantek
realtime++ is key
#
Loqi
realtime has 3 karma
#
aaronpk
yeah IRC is not the greatest plumbing and is certainly not the greatest UI
#
tantek
I would disagree about the UI aspect
#
snarfed
it's very appropriate for what it was designed for, just not also everything you've overloaded it for
#
tantek
it is 1) FAST
#
tantek
and 2 ) very encouraging of SHORT statements
#
aaronpk
and yet for some reason I still find it far more useful than the UI of feed readers or other things
#
tantek
^^^ that's why
#
aaronpk
I think Slack has done a great job of making the good parts of IRC look a lot better
#
tantek
and 3 ) SIMPLER (just one text box to type in typically, no checkboxes, no optional title/tags, none of that extraneous carp)
#
aaronpk
the UI difference between writing in IRC and posting to my website and POSSEing is with IRC I first load the context of the room, but when posting from a client like Quill there's no context adn I just choose where to push the sentence

#
tantek
Quill or monocle?
#
tantek
the nice thing about the current IRC logs is that you see context quickly before you post
#
tantek
whereas a pure posting client doesn't give you that
#
tantek
is still waiting to see when someone will go full-on integrated /reader /create UI on their homepage
#
tantek
or on another page like /read

#

see now i'm leaning towards something totally different
#
aaronpk
treating my local reader (right now IRC client) as a totally private thing that stores all my logs of things
#
aaronpk
and that has the ability to publish things on my public website
#
snarfed
sounds better
#
KevinMarks
right, which is like the twitter UI
#
aaronpk
cause that's how I use my IRC client right now
#
KevinMarks
woodwind is close to this
#
tantek
would be interesting to see a /reader structured more like an IRC client, where you expect to scroll to the bottom to see the lates
#
KevinMarks
with a read up to line like slack

there is so much to do with ones own website where the silos are already build and you can just use them, another check-in thingy, checking in and rating every beer you drink https://untappd.com/user/jeena
#
tantek
what is Untappd?
#
Loqi
Untappd is a social silo for posting consumptions of beer (which they call "Check-ins" to beers) and optionally any or all of where (venue, thus making it an actual checkin), 1-5 star rating, photo, or review commentary https://indiewebcamp.com/Untappd

Jeena: totally doable! start very simple and low tech, then iterate. e.g. https://snarfed.org/beer is dirt simple

(my list pages like that don't even have mf2 yet, mostly because we don't know what it is yet. it's still unclear even for books, movies, etc)
#
tantek
agreed
#
tantek
snarfed, for media of that sort, you can always start with h-cite
#

h-cite++ is a handy generic microformat for all kinds of media books, movies, cds, laserdiscs

yeah you know what I use a bottom-scrolling reader far more often
#
tantek
I feel like there some sort of interesting UI/UX insight coming
#
tantek
has anyone tried to build a UI to "Twitter" that is bottom-scrolling? Perhaps have a "[x] Bottom-scrolling" option in Monocle?
#
aaronpk
now i'm tempted to just tear monocle apart and make it bottom-scrolling
#
aaronpk
and make it look more like our irc logs or Slack
#
tantek
both IRC and IM/chat/txt UIs are bottom-scrolling. just saying.
#
tantek
that's one way to make a distinctive reader
#
tantek
it also solves the problem of tweets going one time direction, and their @-replies underneath them going the other time direction
#
aaronpk
i already added the concept of "channels" to monocle, so...
#
kylewm
scrolling seems very hard to get right; would you autoscroll to new entries?
#
aaronpk
probably yeah. with the little "read" marker
#
aaronpk
maybe possibly not scrolling un-read things off the screen
#
Jeena
kylewm++ fixed his reader today which I broke this morning https://github.com/kylewm/woodwind/issues/31

I'm still not quite sure how to work around the alt-text of the javascript enhanced images showing up in the reader but at least the noscript image shows up again :)

what is bottom-scrolling?

It looks like we don't have a page for "bottom-scrolling" yet. Would you like to create it? http://indiewebcamp.com/s/101V
