GWG: it's a safe bet
#
tantek
also - advice for NYC - plan / create / announce the events at least 2-4 weeks in advance
#
tantek
people seem to lock down their schedules in advance in NYC, in contrast to SF where people often make day-of decisions
#
GWG
We did.

now it's Receive direct messages from anyone"

#
tantek
GWG, you said "We did."
#
tantek
GWG, I mean including inviting people - e.g. past IWC NYC attendees (2-4 weeks in advance)
#
tantek
aaronpk - hmm - that's kind of more of a screenshot than a quote of a tweet
#
tantek
in other news, I quoted a deleted tweet today: http://tantek.com/2015/110/t2/ssl-ux-critiques-extwebsummit
#
tantek
aaronpk - also - is that really an anstronaut with a ST:Voyager outfit?!?

#
aaronpk
like I said, an experiment
#
aaronpk
and yes it is!
#
tantek
crazy
#
aaronpk
she is my hero
#
tantek
seriously
#
tantek
what do you think of the ethics or appropriateness of quoting a deleted tweet? I felt more ok about it since it was from a pseudonymous account.
#
tantek
only reason I could see the tweet is I had a tab open to @Swiftonsecurity's profile page
#
aaronpk
that's a tough one
#
tantek
also, there's the subject matter irony - of quoting a deleted tweet from a pseudonymous security tweeter.
#
aaronpk
what if you had posted the quote of it, then it was deleted months later?
#
tantek
that's different
#
aaronpk
did you know it was deleted when you quoted it then?
#
tantek
this is *knowingly* posting a quote of a deleted tweet
#
tantek
see my post
#
tantek
which is why I didn't bother explicitly quoting the first two
#
tantek
not quoting the first two encourages clicking on them which shows alot more context than if I had quoted them inline
#
aaronpk
i think the fact it's a pseudonymous account makes it mostly okay
#
tantek
and especially since it's about security, that makes it kind of funny
#
aaronpk
i'm trying to imagine if it was a non-pseudonymous account
KartikPrabhu joined the channel
#
aaronpk
and it wasn't replaced by another tweet later?
#
tantek
correct
#
tantek
Twitter is certainly ok with "posted the quote of it, then it was deleted months later" - because their embed code/HTML has inline content of a tweet so that even if a tweet is unavailable, the quote is still displayed on your site.
#
aaronpk
oh good point! cause the "embed code" contains the tweet text
#
tantek
aaronpk what's the deal with that site?
#
aaronpk
tantek: search for swiftonsecurity
#
aaronpk
it's a feed reader and has a bunch of your content in it!
#
tantek
what the what
#
tantek

does it ever happen to anyone else where you code something that you expect does just one thing at a time, but it turns out you structured your code so that you put in the right place for an iteration, so when you went to add that support, it was already working?
#
tantek
e.g. I just discovered my Falcon code that curls Bridgy to POSSE likes to faves on Twitter actually does multiple likes in a row automatically.
#
tantek
I just posted 7 likes of tweets in a row, and with one "like it" button press, all of them were POSSEd at once
#
tantek
(well, one after another)
#
tantek
but with just one button press
#
KevinMarks_
because you already had a foreach() in there somewhere?
#
KevinMarks_
I've had that kind of experience with Python before, and a little bit with node, though there it's more that calbackiness makes things work in parallel
#
benwerd
If I'm reading this right, Facebook is discriminating against content that isn't posted directly into the feed: http://newsroom.fb.com/news/2015/04/news-feed-fyi-balancing-content-from-friends-and-pages/
#
Loqi
benwerd: tantek left you a message on 4/19 at 2:17pm: what do you think of IWC 2015 July 11-12 in Portland? Would you be able to make that? http://indiewebcamp.com/irc/2015-04-19/line/1429478278357
#
aaronpk
i've noticed that for sure
#
tantek
KevinMarks: yeah - apparently I accidentally put the code not where I intended initially, but where it turned out to be more useful!
#
aaronpk
tho i would phrase it "prioritizing content posted directly into the feed" to avoid the double negative
#
benwerd
Which means every indieweb app, as well as apps like Buffer and Hootsuite, is screwed on Facebook
#
tantek
what does posted directly into the feed mean? using the web UI/
#
benwerd
or their own-branded apps
#
aaronpk
right, not using the API basically
#
kylewm
I wonder if it means posted directly as opposed to "reshared a post from Clickhole.com" or whatever
KartikPrabhu joined the channel
#
KevinMarks_
so we now need to use browser automation to posse?
#
tantek
what about all the noise from FB Share buttons?
#

Estr and KartikPrabhu joined the channel

#
aaronpk
tantek: whoa, they copied your original post to their site and then linked to *their* copy in their tweet?
#
KevinMarks_
reposting?
#
tantek
did they do it manually? or did a bot go crawl my PSL and see "accessibility" there (which is NOT in the POSSE tweet)
#
aaronpk
whoa does twitter have multi-reply now?!
#
tantek
example?
#
benwerd
btw why the schedule move?

#

#

Oh, it includes the author
#
tantek
aaronpk: is that from a stream or … ?
#
tantek
screenshot context
#
aaronpk
yeah my home timeline
#
aaronpk
oh you know what? it's showing me the names of people I follow, and the "1 other" is someone I don't follow
#
tantek
tries to go to http://aaronparecki.com/uploads/ and gets webdav-auth blocked
#
aaronpk
yeah I don't have an index, that would be bad
#
aaronpk
lots of semi-private content, or at least things I don't want discoverable
#
tantek
how should we start indicating the more solid nature of the 7/11-12 IWC 2015 date?
#
aaronpk
it's one-button sharing from skitch, easiest way for me to post a screenshot

I think that's what aaronpk built on his own site - of incoming webmentions maybe

#
ben_thatmustbeme

#
tantek
main issue with AS2 is excess. excess vocab, syntax, complexity etc.
#
ben_thatmustbeme
figured as much
#
tantek
would be interesting to see you do it with h-feed first, see how minimal you can make it
#
tantek
and then experiment with AS2
#
tantek
with h-feed, at least you'd have readers that you could use to view / verify your output

that way you could have a functional baseline to start with

whereas AS2 would be publish-only

aaronpk: anyway I'm gonna try setting that up again sometime this week, you'll hear from me then..
#
rhiaro
I'm going to adapt teacup for my /where checkins
#
aaronpk
now you can use the fancy frequency+location filtering it does too :)
#
rhiaro
ooooooooh
#
tantek
teacup for checkins?!?
#
rhiaro
tantek :it won't be teacup any more
#
rhiaro
just quill with buttons
#
aaronpk
might need some fine-tuning to prioritize location over frequency though, not sure
#
aaronpk
oh man i haven't even considered what to call my own checkin app
#
rhiaro
I only have ten places I check in
#
rhiaro
I'm calling it Burrow, after the weasley clock thing
#
rhiaro
although it was a close one with Mortal Peril
#
aaronpk
does a ship's log book have a fancy name?
#
rhiaro
I was also thinking Spyglass as inkeeping with your naming scheme
#
rhiaro
as it's useful for stalking
#
aaronpk
that's creepy
#
aaronpk
also there's already Monocle
#
rhiaro
checking in constantly enables creepy!
#
tantek
what happened to Compass?
#
aaronpk
Compass is the GPS tracking part

#
aaronpk
maybe I could use Compass for checkins instead

do we have a wiki page that documents the methods of communication we use here? e.g. no mailing lists, irc+wiki only?
#
KartikPrabhu
or maybe "concierge"
#
rhiaro
aaronpk: I think that's on the getting started page or something
#
KartikPrabhu
what is mailing list?
#
aaronpk
i guess i was looking for a more positive framing of it
#
tantek
we had to do a negative (cut out email) to get here so I'm not sure how to better state that
#
aaronpk
I guess I'd like a page that says "Come join the IRC channel! Conversation happens there around the clock. Discussion flows from IRC to the wiki when there are things to document or when things are resolved. (btw we don't use email because http://microformats.org/wiki/wiki-better-than-email)"
#
tantek
aaronpk: /IRC says roughly that now
#
aaronpk
it's sooooo long
#
aaronpk
and full of technical goop about IRC clients
#
aaronpk
maybe we can make an actual /discuss page that isn't just an alias for /IRC
#
tantek
because IRC clients still require technical goop
#
aaronpk
right but that detracts from the purpose of the "how we discuss things" topic
#
tantek
what's with the hypothetical section on "Voice" ? http://indiewebcamp.com/IRC#Voice
#
tantek
aaronpk - what's the need for a "how we discuss things" topic ?
#
tantek
that's just more busywork IMO
#
aaronpk
well the immediate need is to answer Ann's question of how we discuss things
#
tantek
that's an FAQ
#
aaronpk
and I figured if she's asking, other people probably would ask in the future, and I'd rather reply with a URL
#
aaronpk
again with the negative framing
#
tantek
it's because people have asked that exact question
#
tantek
you have to say no to things in order to focus on things that matter
#
tantek
where's Ann's precise question? can you provide a permalink?
#
rhiaro
irc is pretty alien to many even tecchie people. It's good to be friendly about it if they have to use it
#
tantek.com
edited /FAQ (+63) "/* How do you figure stuff out */ add an alias for the question to make it more findable"
(view diff)
#
tantek
rhiaro: strongly agreed about making IRC more friendly - it's why we have the best/friendliest IRC logs
#
tantek
which are much better than any email archives
#
tantek
comparing those A/B usually convinces people quickly
#
tantek
unless they're essayists and are upset they can't just spew forth long essays that they expect everyone to read
#
rhiaro
and then they should be on their own site of course ;)
#
tantek
you get it :)
#
KevinMarks_
actually we shoudl do exactly what harry asks for there
#
KevinMarks_
email all wiki edits to the maling list

Loqi already is parsing out wiki edits for only the socialwg pages, he could easily email them
#
Loqi
who, me?
#
tantek
aaronpk: question is, would we get any more productive participation out of it?
#
tantek
is it really worth bridging to a honeypot for timewasters?
#
aaronpk
possibly it is worth asking if people would find that useful
#
tantek
probably better to just let email lists implode all by themselves
#
rhiaro
oh god no please don't email wiki edits
#
tantek
hahaha
#
rhiaro
maybe interesting to generate something one could subscribe to with a reader... if one wanted to..
#
tantek
mediawiki already has feeds
#
KevinMarks_
email all irc comments too
#
aaronpk
tantek: the recentchanges feed on the w3c wiki is unusable because it combines all WGs
#
tantek
email an IRC log digest at the end of every day
#
aaronpk
actually i was brainstorming something similar
#
aaronpk
i want to make an h-feed of the IRC logs but formatted as one entry per "conversation thread" where it would just look for a gap in conversations of like >30 minutes and generate a new h-entry of that

would anyone find this useful? given a page like http://indiewebcamp.com/irc-people (a list of people in a group or community), subscribe to everyone's blogs in your reader
#
rhiaro
aaronpk: yes!
#
bret
reading through https://github.com/e14n/pump.io/blob/master/API.md is really helping me understand where AS is today
#
bret
/how it works
#
kylewm
if you added support webfinger and oauth1, it doesn't seem all that hard to speak with a pump server
#
aaronpk
then why hasn't anyone else yet?
#
tantek
kylewm: it was always more work than necessary
#
tantek
just like ostatus / salmon / openid etc.
#
tantek
it's how aaronpk and I ended up here
#
tantek
it's not whether it's possible or not, it's about how necessary are all the requirements
#
kylewm
well I think pump was an attempt at simplifying the ostatus/salmon/openid stuff
#
kylewm
it may still be one or two levels too complicated
#
tantek
which means it may be a good candidate for a proxy for backcompat
#
tantek
but not for asking everyone to eimplement
#
tantek
we should treat complex standards the same as snowflake APIs
#
tantek
something to be wrapped with a proxy
#
Loqi
I agree
#
kylewm
aaronpk: i don't know the answer to that question, i think their goal was for everyone to use pump.io as a library rather than a protocol
#
kylewm
but why didn't anybody else implement Push 0.4 before you and cweiske did?
#
tantek
kylewm - if you're fairly certain about that, you should add pumpio to /monoculture
#
tantek
since advocating everyone use the same library is a monoculture
#
aaronpk
kylewm: possibly because the spec was not very well written
#
aaronpk
or, because there was not a clear incentive for using PuSH
#
aaronpk
i am not sure
#
tantek
a symptom of complex specs also
#
kylewm
yeah i think the latter
#
tantek
kylewm: yes the latter
#
tantek
or rather in priority order
#
tantek
more important to just get stuff published ( -> microformats)
#
tantek
and then notify of replies ( -> webmention)
#
tantek
readers came after we had that working
#
tantek
also a good reason for minimal building block standards
