hi there:)
#
freescholar
and thanks for the links.
#
tantek
welcome freescholar! what's your personal site?
squeakytoy2 joined the channel
#
tantek
also found out that Twitter does not show image preview of FB photos either (in addition to IG photos), e.g. https://twitter.com/t/status/563863770426925057
#
tantek
gotta love that "unsupportedbrowser" redirect. what the what.
#
aaronpk
lol at following redirects on that url
#
aaronpk
thanks facebook
#
aaronpk
the blame for not showing image previews of facebook photos is mostly on facebook though
#
aaronpk
or rather, it was not twitter's fault that IG photos stopped showing the previews
#
tantek
nah. if FB can do auto-image preview of sites that don't support metacrap, Twitter can too.
#
tantek
once Twitter start showing image-preview (or /link-preview in general ) from h-entry markup, WITHOUT requiring whitelisting, then we can talk about blaming FB for not publishing h-entry
#
tantek
til then, I see no reason why FB should have to support Twitter' proprietary metacrap
#
freescholar
tantek: powerToConnect.org - this is all very cool
#
freescholar
tantek: http://powerToConnect.org
#
tantek
freescholar: that looks like project / product site, not a personal site
#
tantek
freescholar: do you have a personal site?
#
freescholar
tantek: not really a personal site, they are all projects that offer free stuff, as in http://FSF.org free. I am not very interesting personally *lol
#
tantek
freescholar: do you use Twitter?
#
freescholar
tantek: @mickymetts
#
tantek
freescholar cool! have you considered having your own website like mickymetts(.)me to post and own your tweets, retweets, and thinks you favorite?
#
freescholar
tantek: no, we work towards building tools that do not track us, and do the necessary evil of posting to the corporate sites. Working on ways for people to post and retain their personal data and control who sees it. I am a worker owner at http://agaric.com
#
tantek
freescholar: isn't it better to have your public posts be on your own site, without tracking scripts/cookies, than to have your public posts only on Twitter?
#
freescholar
tantek: sorry - multi-tasking and misunderstood ya. yeap.

#

you can contact him via /contact at his domain - he got that working last October :)
#
timmmmyboy
Thanks to you :)
#
tantek
hey timmmmyboy! didn't realize that was your irc nick!
#
timmmmyboy
I have a message to Jim to see about sponsorship, I think it's definitely doable again but don't want to confirm until I talk with him
#
timmmmyboy
Yeah, I can't seem to shed this awful screenname, like a bad habit
#
timmmmyboy
I might be able to assist with the whole "bring remote users in virtually" thing too
#
tantek
that would be a big help
#
tantek
we had aaronpk's awesome streaming / archiving camera+youtube rig last time
#
tantek
but aaronpk will be remote this year for IWC Cambridge
#
tantek
so we'll need to come up with another solution
wolftune joined the channel
#
timmmmyboy
What were the details on that rig? Was it a Youtube livestream or a Hangout or something like that?
#
timmmmyboy
I have a friend that has this and would likely loan it to me, pretty low overhead to setup http://www.teradek.com/pages/vidiu
#
tantek
I think it was a youtube livestream which was automatically(?) archived into avideo
#
kylewm
Hangouts on Air?
#
kylewm
nope sorry that was IWC Online
#
tantek
aaronpk may have captured the remote participation details on the wiki page for the event /2014/Cambridge
#
timmmmyboy
Yeah YouTube livestreams will auto archive, Hangouts on Air will too, but Hangout probably only makes sense if there's going to be interaction between us
#
timmmmyboy
I think for Cambridge it was a one-way livestream and IRC for backchannel
awolf joined the channel
squeakytoy2 joined the channel
#
ben_thatmust
i was actually tempted to look into an HTC RE for that purpose, but I don't know how well that would work, its limited to the amount of single stream
#
ben_thatmust
we could do hangouts on air though too
#
ben_thatmust

Hangouts on Air works if remote participants want to present
hugoroyd, benwerd, upper-- and timmmmyb_ joined the channel
#
timmmmyb_
remote presentations complicates things a bit since you have to be able to bring them onto the projector, sound to everyone in the room, etc. Although I think we could setup a separate Hangout specifically for presenting users and just have someone hook their laptop up with that Hangout
#
timmmmyb_
If we're in the same room the connection to projector was easy enough and I believe it had sound.
#
GWG
I wonder if I could build a vidiu clone with a Pi
snarfed and timmmmyboy joined the channel
#
timmmmyboy
You'd have to reverse engineer the HDMI out to be HDMI in (which my gut tells me is a bit like 15 year old me trying to "download a CD Burner" to our family computer)
ben_thatmust_ joined the channel
#
timmmmyboy
But I know nothing of hardware engineering. Maybe a breakout board for video input? I'd love a cheaper version of what Vidiu does if that were possible.
#
aaronpk
timmmmyboy: yes I was using the vidiu broadcasting to youtube
#
ben_thatmust_
i don't think remote presenters would work, but at least the ability to have more input than just in chat
#
timmmmyboy
aaronpk: awesome, I think that's probably an easy way to go. Plus it means I get to travel light if someone local wants to volunteer to bring a tripod.
#
aaronpk
that plus a small video camera with hdmi out is a pretty good way to do a broadcast
#
aaronpk
i was using the canon vixia rf500 with it
#
timmmmyboy
I was just thinking an https://appear.in room for presenters that want to present and someone in the room pulls it up on their laptop and hooks it up. Presenter screenshares
#
timmmmyboy
That might be the camera we have for the Vidiu as well!
#
aaronpk
it's cheap and half decent
#
aaronpk
not the best at low light though
#
timmmmyboy
I know it's a small Canon with HDMI out. So I'll plan on bringing the camera and broadcasting box if someone can source a tripod so I don't have to carry that on a plane
#
timmmmyboy
Now that I think about it, https://appear.in could be an interesting way of bringing people's screens into the stream.
#
GWG
timmmmyboy: I was thinking a high quality webcam would work with a laptop in a pinch
#
GWG
A Logitech C920 is surprisingly good
#
aaronpk
GWG: that works okay for video but awful for audio
#
timmmmyboy
Each person going up to present opens the appear.in room and shares their screen, meanwhile the camera is the only other participant in the appear.in room. Instant video and screen. HDMI out from computer to vidiu
#
aaronpk
a c920 helps for audio but it's really hard to get good audio without a separate mic
#
timmmmyboy
That's exactly what I was going to say, and positioning a webcam like that can be hard in largish room
#
timmmmyboy
Did you use the built in mic on that canon last year @aaronpk?
#
aaronpk
i think so yeah. iirc we had some complaints about the audio tho
#
timmmmyboy
I have a wireless lavalier, tradeoff is the presenter will sound really good and you won't hear a thing from people in the room
#
GWG
I have a good audio equipment collection
#
GWG
I'm new to video
#
ben_thatmust_
ack, i got rid of my tripod earlier this year because i never used it anymore
#
timmmmyboy
I might have a smaller one that would be manageable to travel with. I'll go "shopping" at UMW and see :)

timmmmyboy: Two channel mixer
#
aaronpk
i like the tiny polaroid ones
#
aaronpk
they're only like 42" tall but they collapse down to a foot
#
timmmmyboy
This is what happens with me when it comes to livestreaming stuff. "Oh I'll just bring a vidiu...maybe try to pull screens in by appear.in....probably need a dedicated laptop for that......audio won't be great, I'll grab a mixer and a small mic......well while I'm at it I might as well put a second camera over here....."
#
timmmmyboy
Let me know if you can find a tripod ben_thatmust_ otherwise I'll see what I can bring that won't be too crazy to carry on a plane.
#
aaronpk
timmmmyboy: you have no idea how far down that rabbit hole i have gone...
#
ben_thatmust_
haha, yeah, audio and video proliferation
#
timmmmyboy
@aaronpk I believe it. I'm forcing myself not to consider grabbing a laptop that has Wirecast on it. I do actually want to participate in IndieWebCamp and not produce it like a show, haha
CaptainCalliope_ joined the channel
#
aaronpk
timmmmyboy: i've actually had terrible luck with wirecast
#
timmmmyboy
It's a nice piece of software but terribly resource-heavy
#
aaronpk
the USB bus can't keep up with the amount of data i try to shove through it from the cameras
#
aaronpk
and using an HDMI->thunderbolt converter still only lets you get a max of 2 cameras in on the macbook pros cause they only have 2 thunderbolt ports
#
aaronpk
even then, it couldn't keep up a frame rate of more than 5-10fps
#
aaronpk
and this was on a new macbook pro
#
aaronpk
so I switched to fully dedicated hardware. http://blackmagicdesign.com has some great stuff
#
GWG
I keep looking for an easy solution
#
aaronpk
i've got a pretty good setup now, it's "easy" in that i put all the complicated stuff together into a box so I only have to plug in cameras at an event
#
timmmmyboy
We got a ton of the Blackmagic stuff at UMW in the new building, couldn't agree more.
#
timmmmyboy
Using that atem television studio?
gRegor` joined the channel

#

The recording studio in the new building has the Blackmagic 4k cameras. They're still figuring out the setup of everything in that space but it's going to be a killer little studio when it's done and it's almost all Blackmagic equipment (green screen cyclorama too)

kylewm
i think "fun" is always implied here ;)
#
ben_thatmust
hmm, so you login to some site via indieauth, (which gives it post access) it gets your phone number (from polling your site or just asking you) then whenever you send a webmention to it, it will send you that message to your phone, when you respond it posts a reply to that message via MP
#
ben_thatmust
or if you just message it directly, it posts it as a note
#
ben_thatmust
its certainly doable
