wow twitter is really de-emphasizing the whole twitter app thing
#
aaronpk
they took out the navigation link in the header bar, now the only way to find your list of apps is in a tiny link in the footer
#
aaronpk
apparently there is a limit on the number of instagram apps that can be registered on one account
#
aaronpk
that limit is 5
#
aaronpk
i swear every possible thing that could go wrong today has
#
aaronpk
all I wanted to do was make a twitter and facebook oauth thingy

#

what is hosting?
#
Loqi
Web hosting is perhaps the primary regular cost in maintaining an Indie Web Site (more expensive than most domain name registrations/renewals) https://indiewebcamp.com/hosting
#
KartikPrabhu
clintpatty: that should answer your question from earlier about hosting ^
#
clintpatty
ah
#
clintpatty
KartikPrabhu: thank you
#
clintpatty
but I was specifically wondering if anyone here is self-hosting with an Intel Galileo
#
KartikPrabhu
from that page it seems not
#
clintpatty
yeah it was mentioned on the page
#
clintpatty
but no links to anyone using that
#
clintpatty
I used to self-host without a domain name around 2004 with a Celeron 500
#
clintpatty
and it seems like the Galileo is sufficient given that I can mangle enough ports out of it
#
KartikPrabhu
aah but for the "indieweb" a domain name is important
#
KartikPrabhu
else it is just "selfhosting"
#
clintpatty
right
#
clintpatty
i just want to get it running, first
#
clintpatty
then try to jump on board
#
KartikPrabhu
of course
#
clintpatty
i have no real web design experience
#
KartikPrabhu
neither did I before making my site
#
clintpatty
neat, that is reassuring
#
GWG
I still don't, but we all press on

Phyks
I'm working on a RSS reader, and I'd very much like to be able to handle mf2 feeds
#
Phyks
I didn't find anything in the doc about a way to know if an URL is a valid mf2 feed or not, is there some specific header or should I rely only on the HTML itself ?
#
aaronpk
Phyks: hi!
#
aaronpk
let me see if there are any docs on that
#
aaronpk
basically you look for either a top-level h-feed object, otherwise you look for a list of h-entrys on the page
#
aaronpk
to answer your question specifically, yes you should rely only on the HTML itself
#
aaronpk
if you run the HTML through a microformats parser you will quickly be able to see if there is an h-feed or a bunch of h-entry items
#
Phyks
yes I found php-mf2 and plan on using it
#
Phyks
but for now, I run it on every URL and check that it finds anything or not
#
aaronpk
great! there's a quick way to test that one, at http://pin13.net/mf2/
#
Phyks
and I was wondering how much overhead I could drop
#
Phyks
I guess php-mf2 already implements the previous algorithm in the doc ?
#
aaronpk
php-mf2 is a microformats parser, but nothing more than that. so it will give you back a data structure for the HTML page
#
aaronpk
it doesn't know about things like post and authors, it just provides access to the mf2 data
#
Phyks
yep, but concerning the title of the page and so on ?
#
aaronpk
the https://indiewebcamp.com/feed#How_To_Consume page describes how to find an appropriate "title" for the feed
#
aaronpk
Phyks: also, welcome! out of curiosity, what's your personal website?
#
Phyks
phyks.me, but I'm refactoring it right now to get mf2 support
#
aaronpk
awesome
#
aaronpk
an easy first step is adding some rel=me links to other profiles so that you can sign in to the wiki
#
Phyks
(another subject, but I'm considering moving to known… although I'm not very much a fan of the writing interface)
#
aaronpk
looks like you have a github link on your home page, so that's an easy one. just add rel="me" to the link and you'll be able to sign in!
#
aaronpk
Known is great and has a lot of community support here. but there's definitely nothing wrong with rolling your own tools
#
aaronpk
also you might want to have a look at Micropub which lets you use a bunch of different apps to post to your own website
#
aaronpk
https://quill.p3k.io/ is a sample app and will walk you through setting it up on your site
#
Phyks
thanks, I'll have a look
#
Phyks
I'm using static webpages for now, but consider moving to something else
#
Phyks
I like the way known can handle not only blog posts but also status updates, etc
#
Phyks
but, by chance, do you know people using known and publishing about code snippets etc as well ?
#
Phyks
I fear this is something that known may not be well fitted for…
#
Phyks
(should be ok about the rel=me link btw)
elf-pavlik joined the channel
#
aaronpk
Phyks: hmm there's some info about people hosting code here: https://indiewebcamp.com/code But I'm not sure about people using Known to post code snippets
#
GWG
!tell bear Looking at nginx cipher list, RC4 is there
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell him that when I see him next
#
Phyks
aaronpk: well, not necessarily snippets, but blog posts containing code and stuff like this. For now, my best bets are pelican and known, but I'm not sure a static website is that nice.
#
aaronpk
there are certain benefits to a static website, but it's certainly not for everyone.
