mko - context is, we have a page on the wiki /archive which currently is used to document TWO different things
#
tantek
thus updating that page is getting awkward :/
#
tantek
thus I want to create two *separate* pages for the distinct notions of archive
#
tantek
which requires two names
#
tantek
best attempt so far (not great) is "online archive" vs. "archive copy"
#
mko
Oh. Gotcha. Yeah. I'd definitely split those into two things. I also don't consider what aaronpk as an "archive."
#
aaronpk
I like "archive copy" when referring to archiving content that is not mine because it's implied that the archive is not the canonical source
#
mko
For example: http://aaronparecki.com/2014/09/10 is a content aggregation.
#
aaronpk
mko: why aggregation? that's just all my content
#
aaronpk
it's not like it's coming from different sources
#
mko
Different types of content.
#
tantek
mko - in this regard, you are fighting established convention
#
tantek
e.g. WordPress "archives by month"
#
aaronpk
they are all "posts"
#
tantek
"WordPress archives"
#
tantek
all in reference to year/month "content aggregation" as you put it
#
mko
Okay. /shrug. I would never call it an "archive" since it's not.
#
tantek
mko - users are calling them archives

#
mko
We're on a bunny trail. Let's get back to the subject at hand. Assuming we keep "Archive" to mean "collection of aggregate data or content" as is in use, why can't we use the term "Archival Backup" for the second use-case?
#
aaronpk
what's wrong with "archive copy" for the second?
#
mko
It sounds like a really strange action.
#
aaronpk
because "copy" is also a verb?
#
mko
No. So is backup. It's more about the word "Archive" as a modifier.
#
mko
"Archival Copy" works fine, too.
#
aaronpk
i gotta run. will noodle on this later.
#
mko
I just think Backup is more accurate.

mko "Archive Storage" is once again too ambiguous
#
mko
tantek: Yeah. Probably right. :-\ Naming things is hard.
#
tantek
to me that reads like "how do you store your archive navigation"
Pea1 joined the channel
#
tantek
hence I deliberately suggested "copy" to imply *not* original, and likely not by the author either
#
tantek
also why "copy" rather than "backup" - backup implies owner/user is originator of the data
#
mko
I'm fine with "Copy" instead of "Backup" or "Storage" but it really should be "Archival" not "Archive" since the usage is meant as an adjective describing "copy"
#
tantek
what's happening on the Twitters? how did "indieweb" get mentioned same time as "gamergate"? anyone look into whether it was accidental / coincidental or deliberate trolling?

#

it was a comment i hadn't seen on twitter
#
tantek
I don't understand why you would put comments / marginalia on a JS-only side-silo instead of posting them to your own site.
#
tantek
I'm just going to copy it here to save everyone else the trouble:
#
tantek
re: http://indiewebcamp.com/Why_web_sign-in#But_emails_are_widely_understood "You cannot imagine how much I regularly suffer due to being part of this "very small minority of nerds". Unfortunately the will not to learn about these different ways is very strong."
#
rascul
this thing is really weird, i don't think i like it
#
tantek
the slide-out thing is annoying too - it covers the original so you can't see the comment in context
#
tantek
which is the whole point of marginalia - being able to see the note and the original next to each other in context
#
tantek
where's tilgovi? we should ask him what is going on with this clunky UI.
#
rascul
i had to stare at it for a few minutes before i figured out why i couldn't just look at the original wiki page like i always do
#
tantek
and the saddest thing is that his comment "You cannot imagin…" didn't make it through to his Twitter copy: https://twitter.com/almereyda/status/537439270630612992

yes, like using your own site, or tweeting directly
#
rascul
i've read the comment four times now and don't remember it because the entire method is weird and makes little sense to me
#
tantek
right, the UI gets in the way of understanding the content
#
rascul
although, that could also be because of the beer
#
tantek
ok that made even less sense
#

tantek: that seems to be hypothes.is at work. as far I understand it is a "marginalia" hosting silo with browser plugins and all that
#
tantek
but it is such a mess
#
tantek
why would you tweet only the context of your marginalia and not the marginalia itself?!?
#
tantek
that makes ZERO sense
#
KartikPrabhu
the UI is neat though. The sidebar mimics the position of the comment in the page, so the "1" scrolls with page scroll and is clickable to view
#
KartikPrabhu
and has some weird quirks. if the "annotated" text is outside the viewport, clicking on the [1] scrolls you there, but then clicking it again does not reveal the comment unless you scroll a little bit up/down as for why do it on a silo: because it is easier to have someone write and host for you and apparently "annotations" are hard and complicated ;)
#
KartikPrabhu
in the context of POSSE it is oddly weird
#
tantek
I really dislike how the original is covered up by the marginalia
#
tantek
totally dumb way to do it on desktop
#
tantek
I think what we figured out at IWC NYC is the way to do it
#
tantek
zero overlap, sidebar on desktop, inline on mobile
#
KartikPrabhu
well I have to agree don't I ? :P
#
tantek
Both Hypothesis and Medium presentation of marginalias are inferior
#
tantek
on desktop and mobile
#
KartikPrabhu
I think it is a side-effect of "we have to do it in JS" and "desktop first" thinking
#
KartikPrabhu
none of these progressively enhance anyway
#
KartikPrabhu
no JS means no comments
#
tantek
yeah - the JS-first trendy fashion of bad web dev
#
KartikPrabhu
it seems that there is a general idea that annotations are hard
#
tantek
they are hard
#
tantek
it took a while for someone (you) to come up with an answer, and it helped that you had fragmentions as a building block

#

correction: are hard enough without adding other complicated stuff
#
KartikPrabhu

#
tantek

#

#
tantek
this is why I have stopped really respecting opinions of anyone that is proposing stuff like this and not actually actively building on their own site

tantek: Would you prefer deploy?
#
GWG
finchd: My provider uses SSDs. No spinning
#
tantek
deploy is good for putting a software update on a server
