saving (Would take a minute to update the cloud). BTW, I have a *cultural* proposal re tagging.
#
thedod_
suppose a photo tag should be verified by the tagged person (using an existing protocol like webmention, or something else)
#
thedod_
and if I don't say "Yes. It's me, and it's OK to tell others that it's me", it's considered *bad manners* to display this iformation.

gRegor` the problem is that it doesn't happen on *my* site. You can tag *my* photo on *your* site, and I propose that the protocol should include consent of the person being tagged ("external moderation")
#
thedod_
of course even today you can post to a wordpress blog my photo (say, drunk and unshaved) and say "this is the dod", but this is not as machine-harvestable as a standard for people-tagging). It's also rude, but rudeness - like metadata - can be tolerated in small amounts

aaronpk: micropub endpoints need to parse the scopes filed at spaces right?
#
bret
ie req.tokenData.scope.split(' ')
#
fiatjaf
what if when the website doesn't have a webmention endpoint I sent it to some third party webmention service and it stored it there for whenever the original website owner wanted, without him even knowing?
#
KartikPrabhu
why would you send a webmention intended for person A to somewhere else?
#
@TheRealDod
@TheRealDod Thanks to @schnarfed’s https://www.brid.gy/ — feedback on twitter gets to my #IndieWebcamp site too. Sweet.

KartikPrabhu: to create intensive to accept WMs?
#
KartikPrabhu
do you mean incentive?
#
bret
seeing links or mentions to your own site gathered by a 3rd party as a way to see people are actually mentioning or replying to something on your site
#
bret
otherwise, how would you know?
#
KartikPrabhu
you mean I should find out about mentions of my site even thought I don't support webmentions?
snarfed joined the channel
#
KartikPrabhu
any way it thgouht webmention.io dod that
#
bret
it sort of does already, but you have to have an account
#
bret
if i understand correctly
#
bret
this would be for any website
#
bret
it would just validate and record any webmention
#
KartikPrabhu
a site that gathers mentions of any other website? so I should send webmentions of your site to a webmention silo?
#
bret
for the proposed purpose of a fallback endpoint for site that dont advertise
#
bret
those sites could start to then use that service (so then it becomes webmention.io for them) or export the data and implement whatever
#
bret
advertise their own webmention endpoint*
#
KartikPrabhu
hmmm <shrug> I don't think I'll send mentions intended for someone to a third party without them advertising me to do so like webmention.io
#
bret
basically, its an attempt to solve the "I want to reply/send a WM to a site, but it doesn't support WM"
#
KartikPrabhu
why is that a problem?
#
KartikPrabhu
someone does not support thing A and you want to do thing A...
#
KartikPrabhu
"I want to call person A but they don't have a phone, so I call AT&T instead... " ?
#
bret
more like "I want to send person a an SMS, but they dont accept SMS, so instead I will write it down over here if they are interested in reading it at a later date"
#
KartikPrabhu
I wouldn't do that without thet person telling me where to write it down
#
KartikPrabhu
in fact you have already written down your response on your own site
#
KartikPrabhu
and if they are interested they can parse you site and get it
#
KartikPrabhu
also if the person does not accept webmentions, how will they know that their webmentions are being stored on this silo?
KevinMarks__ and emmak joined the channel
#
bret
fiatjaf, if you wanted to build something like that, I would short circuit mt webmention endpoint discovery to a community hub rather than nothing at all
#
bret
the practical use I see is a) discovery of past WM for the site at a later date and b) some kind of annotate.it like plugin that enables annotations on any site via WM
davidized joined the channel
#
bret
*short circuit my
#
fiatjaf
bret: that's probably what I was thinking
#
fiatjaf
I don't understand why didn't anyone build something link this yet
#
bret
fiatjaf: webmention.io is close to it
#
fiatjaf
KartikPrabhu: exactly because it is already written on your site and public on the internet there's no problem in telling other people to host the message for you.
#
bret
except it only accepts things for people who have decided to accept WMs there
#
fiatjaf
bret: "Currently it is not open for signups" is all I see every time I go to webmention.io
#
bret
which you can self host
#
bret
easily
#
fiatjaf
self hosted things aren't well suited for acting as "hubs"
#
fiatjaf
that leads to other thing: webmention DNS.
#
fiatjaf
query it to know where to send your webmentions, instead of discovering it right on the target website
#
fiatjaf
but this is a bad idea, forget I said it
#
bret
dns scares people
#
bret
fiatjaf: i belive you can just use what is running at webmention.herokuapp
#
snarfed
aaronpk: just fyi, your bridgy fb token expired at least before 11/6, and probably earlier
#
snarfed
(i'm trying to confirm for sure that it sent you a notif, but i may not be able to)
