why is Loqi stripping the youtube URL?
#
Loqi
who, me?
#
aaronpk
i'm not sure
#
aaronpk
he un-shortens URLs, so google must be redirecting to youtube.com somehow

alright folks, who knows about "Google Now"? all based on Google proprietary things: http://www.google.com/landing/now/#cards
#
tantek
time to figure out how to build this on open indieweb posts / formats
#
tantek
I think for most of these "cards" we already have microformats
#
tantek
but it would be useful to make a list
#
tantek
and see where the gaps are
#
tantek

each of the types of cards listed appears to be a kind of post
#
tantek
each representable by an existing microformat or something similar (or something we have to minimally propose?)
#
tantek
and so we can figure out minimal markup for each
#
tantek
and based on that markup, minimal styling to recreate the "cards" that are shown here: http://www.google.com/landing/now/#cards
#
tantek
and thus make IndieCards™ (jk on the ™ ;) )

#
barnabywalters
uh, good morning?
#
tantek
jonnybarnes - I apologize I didn't get the full extent of the Twitter POSSE questions you were asking
#
barnabywalters
ah yes I am from the UK
smus joined the channel
#
tantek
if you got my message from before - I'm using multiple cassis functions to do it
#
tantek
not ideal, but I wanted each function to be simple in itself to make using them more predictable
#
barnabywalters
tantek: maybe it would be a good idea to put your twitter POSSE preparation code in a note or a gist somewhere as an example of how to use all the cassis functions involved
#
jonnybarnes
yeah, so at the moment I can swap the url for a 22 char string and thus work out where to cut the string
#
jonnybarnes
now I'm trying to actually do that
#
tantek
jonnybarnes which part?
#
jonnybarnes
I think I've got it working now :)
#
tantek
woot!
#
Loqi
yay!
#
jonnybarnes
I know I need to now work out if I'm cutting in the middle of a word and act accordingly, but in terms of counting chars and counting URLs as 22 chars, would this get accepted by Twitter? https://gist.github.com/jonnybarnes/7942609
#

tantek
barnabywalters - yeah - I'm not too happy with the current Falcon code that calls tw_text_proxy and ellipsize_to_word
#
barnabywalters
tantek: well in that case publishing it serves two purposes — documenting how to use cassis and providing you extra incentive to make it better ;)
#
tantek
oh I've got plenty of incentive - just other things to work on / itches to scratch first
icco joined the channel
#
barnabywalters
I’ve actually been wanting to rewrite my twitter POSSE preparation code recently, using cassis functions instead of my bad rewrites of them
#
barnabywalters
and then making a dumb-as-possible PHP POSSE to twitter package which does top-quality POSSEing with one function call
#
barnabywalters
this is a thing which should be easy for people by now
#
barnabywalters
but it still requires messing with an oauth library, parsing in-reply-to URLs/mf structures for syndication links for POSSE replies, etc etc etc

#
jonnybarnes
will str_replace('ASCII text', 'Unicode text') work properly?
#
jonnybarnes
it should be fine anyway. just realised my regex to match URLs won't match those with non-ascii chars in anyway
#
jonnybarnes
why did I say anyway twice?
#
barnabywalters
yeah, php treats strings whether unicode or ASCII as arrays of bytes
#
jonnybarnes
it works, almost, much nicer than what I was doing before.
#
jonnybarnes
I'm sending the right length thing to twitter, no more than 140 chars accounting for URLs
#
barnabywalters
unicode problems only start happening when you start trying to count characters, chop up strings in the middle of characters or need to match entities against control character sequences
#
barnabywalters
jonnybarnes: great!
#
jonnybarnes
now all I need to do is not put my ellipsis in the middle of a word :)
