Hello

evening neuro`
#
neuro`
How's #indiewebcamp going?
#
barnabywalters
neuro`: good as usual. had a quiet few days
#

Quiet days are good.
#
barnabywalters
indeed. how’s the new job going?

Great, thank you. Love it, awesome people, great spirit (like "think it can be useful? Pick up a license and push it on our Public Github account")

We moved to a new flat this week-end, now I need to clean and get some rest.

I'm writing an AWS scheduler to spawn / terminate regular and spot EC2 instances according to the number of jobs in your queue / load on your servers and other user defined params, with YAML defined thresholds

(user defined params including indeed the hourly price of spots)

Will be opened sourced when it works

aaronpk: do you think it’s reasonable to have two forms of the relmeauth algorithms, one which demands secure redirects (which would be used for authentication stuff) and a looser one which could be used for general identity lookups?
#
barnabywalters
or is that unnecessary complexity
#
aaronpk
interesting
#
barnabywalters
is trying to write a test suite in HTML
#
aaronpk
i'd have to think about that, about when it would be ok to not use https
#
barnabywalters
it’d be really helpful to document an example of a real world insecure redirect and why it’s a vulnerability
#
barnabywalters
as a significant proportion of the algorithm is dedicated to that particular part
#
aaronpk
it's the same as any MITM vulnerability
#
barnabywalters
and the *codebase* does it slightly differently depending on the direction of the rel link, but as far as I can tell that’s mainly for helpful error reporting
#
aaronpk
yeah, a lot of the code is dedicated to helpful error reporting.
#
aaronpk
it would be a much smaller algorithm if a generic "fail" was appropriate in all cases
#
barnabywalters
great, so the prose algorithm can generalise both cases where secure redirects are handled into a single function
#
barnabywalters
which takes about 20% off the size of the spec
#
aaronpk
OTOH helpful error reporting is usually good
#
aaronpk
and if the spec doesn't suggest that, then people ahve to re-implement code that ends up following a different path than a spec
#
barnabywalters
aaronpk: so also mention that the prose spec is a skeleton implementation
#
aaronpk
so if we put all the different error cases in the spec, then the implementations will all be closer and will all be more hepful for debugging
#
barnabywalters
digging through it all I’m having a hard time keeping track of exactly which error case is which and what needs to be done to fix it
barneybook|2, shaners, abrereton, jernst, bnvk and marjolein joined the channel
#
aaronpk
well one of the first things people started saying after using indieauth is that they have a hard time figuring out how to fix a problem when there isone
#
aaronpk
so I started adding more helpful error messages, which also meant I had to break apart a lot of the code in order to be able to return context better
#
barnabywalters
okay, so the prose spec should optimise for helpful error message handling
#
aaronpk
i think so. otherwise, every other implementation will start getting complaints of unhelpful errors
#
barnabywalters
so we need to document which errors there are, with real world examples, and what message needs to be given to the user to help them fix it

aaronpk: I made http://microformats.org/wiki/RelMeAuth#Error_Cases as a container for such cases

bnvk
what video formats are y'all digging these days the most as far as openness, ease of playback, and quality/size ?
#
barnabywalters
benwerd is probably the person to ask about that
#
barnabywalters
I publish mp4 because that’s what my iPad gives me, but it doesn’t play on FF :(
#
barnabywalters
pretty sure there’s still no one open format which works on all popular browsers
#
bnvk
dah, wth, why can't FF play that format back? It's been around for like a decade
#
barnabywalters
patents, or something
#
barnabywalters
as always, the wiki has some stuff: http://indiewebcamp.com/video
#
barnabywalters
esp. the Reference section
#
barnabywalters
“Firefox now delegates to the operating system for MP4 support”
#
barnabywalters
either my videos aren’t the right sort, or FF nightly doesn’t do that
#
barnabywalters
ah, iPad spits out .mov files, which are probably something else
#
bnvk
right, there's for the format and the encoding
#
bnvk
I believe traditionally you used to need the Quicktime plugin to load a .mov file in browser regardless of the codec
#
barnabywalters
yeah, FF can *play* the video if you load *just* the video and approve quicktime
#
barnabywalters
why it can’t do the same in-page beats me
#
barnabywalters
but iPad mov files are h.264, I think, so should be easy to convert one to the other
