@hypothes_is @naypinya have you been tracking the #indieweb stuff? http://werd.io/entry/51dca7e2bed7de945debf707/the-indieweb-as-a-minimum-viable-social-web-ecosystem maybe some overlap wrt web-centric-openness

so in <http://indiewebcamp.com/deleted>, the wiki says: "HTTP Servers should read the <head> of an HTML document before serving it"
#
grawity
if it's a static website, that's highly unlikely since parsing HTML would cause a performance hit
#
grawity
but it's something the *client* (i.e. the Googlebot or whatever) can definitely do
#
grawity
since they already parse many meta tags
#
grawity
but another possible method, one which servers *could* easily support, is to check if a file something.html.gone exists, and return a 410 instead
#
grawity
it seems that I still cannot log in and edit, so I thought I'd just spam my thoughts here

hey all
#
pfefferle
is there any good way to markup likes/mentiones?
#
sandeepshetty
as a receiver (target)?
#

I've been experimenting with some stuff in the json format I have on github
#
sandeepshetty
(the json persistent store I'm working on for converspace)

#
f-a
where people were complaining that "it's a boy" was forcing gender into the newborn and that we shouldn't use the sentence
#
f-a
I hope we're not making the same error with poor Loqi
#
tantek
benwerd - awesome!
#
tantek
was there a conversation about gender and the indieweb that I missed?
#
tantek
checks the logs
#
f-a
tantek, not really
#
f-a
benwerd danke schön, Herr Loqi.
#
f-a
benwerd Actually, making assumptions about the bot's gender there. Bad.
#
f-a
and then you joined, tantek
#
benwerd
It was an offhand comment to myself about applying default gender to things. Really not a conversation ;)
#
f-a
benwerd: where are you from? In italy the 'standard' gender to refer to "gender-unkown" things is masculine
#
benwerd
f-a: the Internet
#
benwerd
is actually the most accurate answer I have for that. but I'm English-speaking.

#
Loqi
benwerd has 3 karma
#
tantek
benwerd - and the problem of gendered languages, wherein gender is assigned to nouns almost randomly.
#
benwerd
There's a fantastic song by the French singer Camille about that.
#
f-a
the eagle = l'aquila (f) (italian) = el aguila (m) (spanish)
#
benwerd
But yes, this is a problem I've managed to avoid by ignoring my entire heritage and not being bilingual.
#
f-a
then you must be canadian
#
aaronpk
the eagle = "Der Adler (m)" German
#
f-a
silly languages we invented, and we keep inventing them!
#
benwerd
let's all speak to each other in prolog
#
benwerd
the grammar's a bit funny but we should be able to infer a lot
#
f-a
I wish I were fluent in prolog
#
aaronpk
how about newspeak?
#
benwerd
what's that?
#
benwerd
from 1984?
#
benwerd
++good
#
f-a
I actually can sustain a conversation in this benwerd danke schön, Herr Loqi.
#
Loqi
grins profusely
#
f-a
woops sorry wrong paste
#
aaronpk
spoken??
#
f-a
alas, I never spoke with anyone in real life

f-a
like, making sounds and all

AFAICT, gendered nouns are essentially 1-2 bits of noise per noun. It doesn't make sense from an evolutionary perspective (assuming natural evolution of natural languages). Perhaps if there's someone with a historical linguistics background here they can shed some light on how/why it happened.
#
tantek
spoke some German in Frankfurt airport during layovers. Was fun to practice. If a bit rusty with "ein" vs. "eine" :/

aaronpk: did you see Sarah Mei's write up about gender in Diaspora* and changing to a text field instead of select/radio/checkbox?
#
aaronpk
oh yea I remember that
#
shaners
i've started only using textfields for gender since then
#
f-a
do you have a link to that, shaners
#
shaners
f-a: there was lots of "response" to it. people kinda lost their shit over it, like people do anytime there's any talk of gender/sex/identity in tech sphere.
#
shaners
if you want to read any of that, i'll leave it as an exercise for the reader
#
shaners
aaronpk: http://dateedge.com only uses free form text for "my gender" and "desired gender". (It's a straightedge dating site.)
#
f-a
shaners: I am usually one of those folks who "lost their shit". The post you linked is fun and informative. I can see some problems though:
#
f-a
say I am russian and I check your profile (you are english). Does the "gender field" auto translates?
#
shaners
f-a: I think it translates correctly.
