sandeepshetty, do you know about the weird diplay issue with firefox on your site?
#
bret
it breaks words across lines when it gets to the end of a line and the word does not fit

bret: Re weird display issue with Firefox, it's because of the CSS word break property I've set to prevent long links from breaking the mobile version. I look into it and see if there's a better solution.

I was just looking through some of your posts on what you have been doing with converspace :)

and they fixed it? is there an issue for it?

f-a: interesting, but I'm already confused about exactly how standarized HTML5 itself is... let alone this profile of it. I've heard people call HTML5 a "living standard" :)
#
f-a
pdurbin: indeed that's a problem too (am I the only one who liked xhtml 2 better...).
#
pdurbin
f-a: liked? the app I work on is Java EE (Enterprise Edition) with JSF (Java Server Faces) so it's all xhtml: https://github.com/iqss/dvn :)

sounds nice. it's unusually hot in Boston

DanC
recently back from a road trip, conflicted about how to manage photos. http://www.madmode.com/2009/advogato_entry0070.html
#
DanC
surfs the logs... nice!
#
neuro`
Coding and IRCing from my grand parents garden, using my iPhone as a modem. The temp is now really nice
#
neuro`
I just fear some bats bump into my screen.
#
DanC
IRC is so nicely low-bandwidth. twitter once was, but not so much any more./
#
neuro`
DanC: IRC over slow connection is even better using mosh (starts a SSH connection, then uses UDP)
#
f-a
bats (should) be smarter than that
#
neuro`
I hope they are.
#
f-a
I began hating twitter when they removed support for rss
#
DanC
neuro`, do I know you from #swig?
#
neuro`
DanC: I don't think so.
#
DanC
is still in denial about google reader going away
#
DanC
can't figure out how to use feedly
#
DanC
wishes for time to try that tiny tiny rss thingy
#
pdurbin
should give mosh a try
#
f-a
DanC: maybe try a 'local' rss reader?
#
f-a
I am a command line aficionado, so I use newsbeuter
#
DanC
I mostly read feeds from my android phone
#
neuro`
DanC: since google reader closed, I just stopped reading RSS
#
f-a
but there are plenty of them out there, for every platform
#
pdurbin
f-a: first my mom emailed me and said, "I can't see your tweets in Google Reader anymore" because Twitter turned off RSS. At least she doesn't have that problem any more ;)
#
neuro`
I pick up interesting articles from my Twitter timeline.
#
DanC
and when I store my knowledge (e.g. what I read, what I liked, ...) I don't trust any one machine
#
f-a
I sadly smile, pdurbin :)(
#
DanC
I tried bittorrent sync the other day. awesome.
#
DanC
sync'd huge videos between my phone and desktop in no time...
#
neuro`
Newsbeuter looks nice
#
DanC
... the cool thing is that I then used the desktop to organize the videos into folders with real words in them, and btsync updated the folder organization on the phone to match
#
DanC
by way of introduction, my own site is http://www.madmode.com/
#
DanC
feed reader requirements: (1) when I'm reading a page in my browser, a subscribe button
#
DanC
(2) ability to edit the feed list, outline style

(3) persistent .newsrc analog (i.e. what I've read), synchronized between desktop(s), mobile, and random-machine-at-web-cafe

or some other thing to put on your server
#
f-a
(as you want to consult stuff from multiple machines)
#
neuro`
DanC: on a "small world" note, the guy who made your blog generator is a very old friend of mine
#
DanC
that's another thing I'm conflicted about: running my own server. A 1:1 ratio of users to administrators seems unsustainable, given the intensity of the bad guys. I do run a few...
#
DanC
(1) as a W3C staff alum, I have space on people.w3.org
#
DanC
(2) I use nearlyfreespeech.net
#
DanC
(3) at work, we're getting into AWS, so I have justification to play with that
#
DanC
I have only stuck a toe in the water
#
f-a
good luck!
#
DanC
what hosting arrangements do others use?
#
f-a
I disagree with your mail-fail ideas though :P
#
f-a
I just a cheap shared hosting as now
#
f-a
Have pondered self hostingn with rasp pi, but I am not a technical user
#
DanC
mail-fail ideas? I thought that was tantek
#
DanC
shared hosting... so no long-running processes?
#
f-a
I think there is some sort of cron possibility with directhost
#
f-a
never used that, I am much 1.0
#
DanC
gets a small epiphany... turn-based computing (a la E, waterken) has a lot in common with "no long-running processes"
#
DanC
small world indeed, neuro`
#
DanC
f-a, I'm still curious/confused what you meant by mail-fail ideas
#
neuro`
Running your won srver gives you both great power and great responsibilities.
#
DanC
well, yeah, sure
#
DanC
but it takes time
#
f-a
that article by tantek
#
neuro`
True. I've ben running my own server since 1998, first at my parents place then in a DC. This is incredibly cheap in France.
#
f-a
I supposed you agreed with it, DanC
#
neuro`
I ended being a system administrator :(

#
DanC
I agree with tantek that email is poorly used, but my views aren't as extreme as his. I'm more afraid that it'll get taken over by facebook etc.
#
neuro`
I fear the day Facebook really integrates Bing and have people not using the Web anymore.
#
DanC
anybody tried openphoto? I was pretty disappointed to see that the actual photo URLs expose the domain of the storage service (amazon, dropbox, ...)
#
DanC
man, that was hard to find
#
f-a
back
#
bret
DanC, While far from perfect, I have been using fever reader. After the initial cost, it costs about $.25 - $.75 in hosting a month.
#
bret
Newsblur and feedbin also look like they have potential
#
neuro`
Tried feedbin, not convincedd
#
DanC
solved his immediate photo sharing problem by copying-and-pasting from facebook to gmail. not bad!
#
bret
neuro` yeah? I have not yet. What was wrong with it. It looks okay. I presume there are some usibility issues?
#
bret
one primary requirement for me is that I can use a phone client to chache unread stories so I can read them without using any data
#
neuro`
bret: tags only, no folder, made my feeds look too mssy and unusable (I had all the tags, then the 400+ feeds in the same list, no way to collapse)
#
bret
fever happens to work with reeder on iphone, so thats what keeps me from using anything else
#
bret
DanC, thats what I use
#
DanC
interesting licensing/deployment model.
#
bret
its buggy, but works well enough till I find something better
#
bret
DanC, technically you get the whole source code once you buy it, but it isnt open source. Im rather bitter about that
#
bret
thinking about it more, its only worth it if you want to use Reedr on iphone or ipad
#
neuro`
Reeder is good
#
bret
which is a real big reason
#
bret
reeder is screaming fast
#
bret
+ full offline support
#
neuro`
Reeder just has no way to export my feeds WTF
DanC joined the channel
#
bret
reeder is just a client to some other service
#
bret
so, fever would handle the feed export
#
bret
or newsbin presumibly?
#
bret
those are the two it works with right now

hey tantek, check it out: http://bret.io/2013/06/24/t4/ pulling in data from pingback.me
#
tantek
hey bret
#
tantek
looking
#
tantek
oh cool - are you displaying mentions automatically now?
#
bret
yeah
#
bret
well, the link at least
#
bret
still need to handle cases where there are no mentions, and maybe put a note or link describing how to send a mention
#
bret
its done with client side JS and pingback.me
#
tantek
looks like you're displaying everything as a mention, but could be showing the actual replies as comments? (in-reply-to etc.)
#
tantek
also, have you considered implementing some reply-context display on your replies?
#
bret
pingback.me only collections mentions, so that is the next problem to deal with
#
bret
and I am not sure how to deal with reply context's yet
#
bret
But I hardly understood JS before IWC2013, so its at least a step! :)
#
tantek
simplest thing to display for a reply context is just the URL you're replying to in a grey box - which is all I do for now for example
#
bret
the thing I am replying to is the @werd.io at the top of the note
#
tantek
yeah - odd to have an @-name link to a post not a user
#
bret
taking into account all of these new ideas, I have been doing some major refactoring on how my site is put together
#
bret
I am a tad naive to how twitter does everything :X
#
tantek
in general (across sites) @-names refer to people, not posts
#
tantek
in fact I don't know of any sites/silos/communities that use them to refer to posts
#
tantek
they've all been used to refer to people
#
bret
I'm thinking about maybe forking pingback.me and expand the data it collects from the webmentions and use that to provide realtimeish reply's and other things people could reply with
#
bret
heh.... I need to fix that
#
bret
But I was happy to reveal some replies I recived that I had missed before! http://innercircle.aok.io/webmention_email_notification
#
bret
it still needs a lot of work, but I am plan on working keeping the Javascript fairly general as a quick and dirty way for people to display webmention/pingbacks from pingback.me https://github.com/bcomnes/pingback-js/blob/master/webmention.js
#
tantek.com
edited /reply-context (+494) "add Tantek.com indieweb example of a rudimentary reply-context"
(view diff)
#
tantek
bret - got to go, but wanted to at least give you these links to a few of my replies with very simple reply contexts so you can at least see if you can get that much working: http://indiewebcamp.com/reply-context#Tantek
#
bret
i had some larger plans for that, but I guess it would be more imidiately gratifying to get something working quicker in the meantime
