It's ridiculous that the enterprise crowd still send PDF proposals to a w3c event and that it's acceptable http://www.w3.org/2013/socialweb/agenda.html #indieweb

barnabywalters
good afternoon aral — nice to see you here
#
aral
Hey man. Ditto :) We can ‘blame’ Mr. Adactio :)
#
barnabywalters
really interesting to see progress with prometheus — are the newsletters going to be published somewhere public?
#
aral
(I’m helping to organise the web camp in Brighton in September so I thought I would pop by.)
#
aral
Thanks! I will look into publishing the newsletter — it’s on my todo list.
#
tommorris
oh hey aral
#
aral
I’m going to have a workshop/design clinic around indiewebcamp for Prometheus — a third day that people who are interested can stay for
#
neuro`
Hey guys
#
aral
Hey Tom :)
#
tommorris
we need a design clinic for indiewebster's websites :)
#
barnabywalters
aral: sounds good, I’d certainly be up for extending my stay for something like that
#
tommorris
needs someone who understands web typography to look at his site.
#
aral
Very cool
#
aral
it would be awesome to have you
#
neuro`
tommorris: URL please?
#
barnabywalters
needs to actually order tickets and flights and such things
#
neuro`
still negociating with wife
#
aral
We’re currently thinking 7th-9th and I’ve actually got those dates tentatively booked with the venue but need to confirm them before we can announce
#
tommorris
alas, I shall be in New York at the time
#
aral
And I really need to write a little something about how the goal of Prometheus really is to realise indieweb/indie data/‘indie self’ for the mainstream. To make it not just a seamless experience but, hopefully, a lovely one :)
#
aral
(The whole reason for doing it is so that people — mere mortals — can own their own data.) :)
#
neuro`
aral: you can also make it searchable, currently google corrects prometheus indie web camp into prometheus indie webcam
#
neuro`
So it's hard to know what it is about
#
aral
Tom, I’d just add a bit more line spacing. Otherwise the measure is good. It’s legible and readable. Anything further will either be self-expression/emotion (nothing wrong with that) or ornamentation (yuk!) :)
#
neuro`
Prometheus github works better
#
neuro`
Hmmm not sure it's the good one
#
tommorris
aral: yeah, I need to sit down and do the maths for line spacing following Richard Rutter's guide
#
tommorris
although I love typography and am fairly good at the print side, I'm more a database monkey than a CSS whiz. ;)
#
aral
Neuro, here’s a direct link: http://codename-prometheus.eu — not much up at the moment.
#
barnabywalters
tommorris: I made a fairly extensive web typography reading list a week or so ago in an attempt to improve my typographical skills, I’ll try to dig it out and publish it
#
aral
(There is more info in the linked to blog post at the bottom of the page, though)
#
neuro`
aral: thank you
#
aral
Cheat sheet: Maslow’s hierarchy of typography: Is it legible? Is it readable? You’re good. Sprinkle with emotion and delight :)
#
tommorris
I tested posting to my site from my £9 Nokia 100 this morning. Worked fine. SMS is a really amazing user interface.
#
barnabywalters
that works ;)
#
tommorris
When they start making iPhones and Samsung Galaxy's with two weeks of battery life and which work with cheap SIM cards you can buy in every country in the world, SMS will stop being useful.
#
tommorris
oh and when 3G works everywhere.
#
barnabywalters
tommorris: you’re using twilio right? do they handle MMSes too?
#
aral
Always good to have a lo-fi fallback, though :)
#
tommorris
barnabywalters: not sure about MMS.
#
barnabywalters
posting images via SMS would be pretty great
#
tommorris
My Nokia 100 doesn't have a camera. ;)
#
barnabywalters
I’m currently working on posting GPX route data — probably convert the GPX to geoJSON then pipe it into leaflet
#
barnabywalters
I figured it’d be a good way to document my hiking, and get me into jogging more ;)
#
neuro`
aral: love the idea. Makes me think I need to go back finishing the status publisher on Publify.
#
aral
neuro: Link? :)
#
tommorris
barnabywalters: Leaflet is amazing, and the tileset you've chosen from Cloudmade is lovely.
#
tommorris
I always preferred Mapbox's cartographic design to Cloudmade's, but that looks great.
#
tommorris
ooh, they've made Cloudmade's site look less shit. nice.
#
barnabywalters
tommorris: thanks! I just picked the one they suggest in the tutorial
#
neuro`
aral: small blogging engine we're turning into an indie web lightweight platform
#
aral
neuro: thanks :)
#

Taking ideas from what tantek does to publish his content

Twitter: one-size-fits-all. WordPress: a comfy pair of jeans that fits. building your own blogging system: bespoke suit. :)
#
f-a
ahah tommorris , nice one
#
f-a
I wish I had the qualities to build my own blogging system (or rather, I did, but it's pretty... frugal)
#
f-a
(I write it in a markdownish program I made)
#
f-a
(and then it autoconverts it/uploads it)
#
barnabywalters
tommorris: hm, not sure my site counts as a bespoke suit. more like some upcycled bits and pieces thrown together and glowing with *ahem* ”rustic charm” :)
#
f-a
(I am thinking of adding comments via some php or js, but I suck at/despise js)
#
neuro`
tommorris: I wish the jeans were not full of security holes (and made of PHP)
#
barnabywalters
f-a: nice! would be great to see some microformats2 in there
#
f-a
barnabywalters: I got to know indiewebcamp via some status.net friends and it got me interested in microformats!
#
f-a
So I am reading about them and hopefully will add them in the immediate future, as theey don't look that difficult to implement!
#
f-a
they are a really smart and elegant solution
#
barnabywalters
f-a: oh cool! we’ve been working on improving the documentation a lot recently and want to do even better, so don’t hesitate to ping me about any issues
#
tommorris
barnabywalters: I think Twilio aren't bothering with MMS because... it sort of never really took off. most people who want to upload a photo or video will do it via HTTP rather than via MMS
#
neuro`
f-a: nah, just plain old HTML :)
#
barnabywalters
tommorris: IIRC they’re always really overpriced anyway
#
tommorris
there are other providers who do MMS. Mogreet do it. The reason I'm using Twilio is because I've got $30 of Twilio credit from a Twilio evangelist.
#
aral
PS. The newsletter has a URL now :) http://thelink.is/prometheus-update-1
#
barnabywalters
aral: woo *reads*
#
aral
barnabywalters: :)
#
neuro`
aral: will blog about it after I get some sleep
#
aral
Thanks, neuro :)
