people overindex on the cost. free services are not always better, just look at /site-deaths
#
cophee
Got it
#
cophee
I guess the guide will need to redirect + convince people to get their own domain
#
aaronpk
without your own domain you aren't really in control of anything, so it all kind of starts there
#
cophee
Ok! just asking since price seemed to be a big factor in why people don't adopt their own sites in the survey
#
aaronpk
yeah, people often forget that they pay far more than the cost of a domain+web hosting for a phone tho
#
cophee
It's so true
#
cophee
It's like 16/yr
#
cophee
Just need to find a way to convince people
#
aaronpk
yep, just like people had to be convinced they needed their own personal mobile phone number
#
pcarrier
looked into importing linktr.ee, and turns out they expose the page settings and links in a nice JSON that's super easy to extract
#
cophee
pcarrier[d]: awesome!!!
#
aaronpk
oh nice
#
pcarrier
(see scrape.js at the bottom for the 10 lines of code…)
#
pcarrier
we've got `pageTitle`, `links` sorted by position with their `title` and `URL`, `theme.colors`…
#
aaronpk
getting into #indieweb-dev territory but yeah this is great
#
pcarrier
not super interested in going further down the rabbit hole, virtualyl nothing to learn here, but if somebody wanted to tackle a static site generator I could provide some help
#

Just talked to my professors about the premise of IndieWeb –– they seem very interested

aaronpk: I think maybe the easiest would be micro.blog then
#
[tantek]
Yes, easiest with room to grow with interconnecting in the indieweb
#
[tantek]
I would not recommend Wordpress to a new person. There is a bunch of easy setup to do simple blogging but as soon as you want to use it socially, you enter a big step up in admin tax
#
cophee
Yeah... Wordpress can get very complicated
#
cophee
Ohno, trying to sign up for micro.blog to see what the user setup flow is like and getting this error
#
cophee
Not sure if it's just on my side
#
aaronpk
oh no, ping [manton]

thinking about how to get people started fast and for free. step 1: enter your email address on found.as, get a login link; step 2a: pick a handle you've already registered, 2b: register a new handle, here `pcarrier`; step 3a: import a linktr.ee, 3b: enter a few named links, some with `rel="me"`, 3c: edit plain HTML, 3d: redirect to your own domain; step 4: enjoy simple HTML being served as https://found.as/pcarrier; step 5: set up pcarrier
