tantek
should we start a wiki listing all the people publicly quitting various silos?
#
tantek
wiki *page
#
tantek
is this interesting? useful? insightful? inspiring? inciting?
#
aaronpk
yea that'd be great!
#
tantek
silo-quits?
#
aaronpk
i'm surprised we don't have this page already: http://indiewebcamp.com/who
#
tantek
create it!
#
tantek
would it be a roster of everyone who's been to an indiewebcamp with an active indieweb site?
#
tantek
a summary of each "class" as it were?
#
tantek
post all the photos!
#
aaronpk
we already have the guest list for each year that covers that
#
tantek
sure but a summary directory of sorts would be nice
#
aaronpk
ah yes, misread.
#
tantek
that way someone new showing up would could see who's involved
#
aaronpk
not with years
#
tantek
years merely parenthetical after the person's name
#
tantek
but a flat list would be better
#
tantek.com
edited /silo (+139) "Silo Quitting"
(view diff)
#
aaronpk
kind of like the "sites built using ____" pages http://middlemanapp.com/community/built-using-middleman/
#
tantek
sure - but only for those who have participated in an IndieWebCamp
#
tantek
we could add a section for remote only participants perhaps
#
tantek
who haven't made it to an indiewebcamp in person
#
aaronpk
i wouldn't even distinguish that
#
aaronpk
the guest list already does that
#
tantek
I would distinguish in-person vs. remote just because there's a very different level of trust afforded to meeting people in person
#
tantek
plus that way it's clear who is on the /who page and why
#
aaronpk
hmm true
#
tantek.com
created /silo-quits (+508) "stub with Douglas Rushkoff quitting Facebook"
(view diff)
#
tantek
as opposed to just being a list of "here are random cool people in the insiders club or something"
#
tantek
ok, silo-quits stubbed - time for a snack.
#
tantek
and coffee

barnabywalters: tantek left you a message on 2/25 at 2:44pm: you should in particular check out the text selection UI on this article: http://www.newrepublic.com/article/112485/aaron-swartz-profile-internet-will-never-save-you - what would be a good "webactions" solution, as well as what would an "indieweb" link/button look like?
#
tantek
hey barnabywalters
#
barnabywalters
Evening tantek
#
barnabywalters
That was a great article, and the selection UI is something I’ve wanted to do for ages but wasn’t sure if it was possible
#
barnabywalters
Quoting blog posts is stupidly hard - a lot of friction
#
barnabywalters
Copy/paste URL, text, author name, URL, put in a h-card with h-cite… it can all be automated
#
barnabywalters
With web actions and D&D
#
tantek
I like the design of UI that shows up once you select the text
#
tantek
I'm thinking of extending my citation UI to support that
#
tantek
the little input boxes and the bottom of my blog posts
#
barnabywalters
My thoughts: use the selection and range Apis to give arbitrary node selections drag handles, augmented with h cite and h card
#
tantek
*at the
#
barnabywalters
So I’ll build this all into the new version of the web actions extension
#
barnabywalters
Which I’m probably calling the web action hero toolbelt
#
barnabywalters
As I’ve got rather a lot of functionality planned
#
barnabywalters
!tell erinjo reading your web actions and button sluts article, great UI brainstorming, how important do you consider the "not leaving the page whilst action in progress" aspect?
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell her that when I see her next
#
barnabywalters
Loqi, how do you tell what gender a particular name is?
#
tantek
barnabywalters - IMO, it's pretty important to not leave the page while action is in progress
#
barnabywalters
tantek: What about opening a new mini window as twitters intents do?
#
barnabywalters
Or opening a new window generally?
#
tantek
the mini new window seems fairly unobtrusive. I'd try and see what Twitter's tweet actions (their term!) do on mobile.
#
barnabywalters
Their terminology is a little inconsistent
#
tantek
of course it is. anything to do with "web intents" is inconsistent. that's the problem.
#
barnabywalters
I think they open a new tab, or whatever similar idiom the browser uses
#
tantek
it's clear people at Twitter had different opinions and no one opinion "won"
#
barnabywalters
At the moment my fork of indieweb reply is just opening a new tab
#
barnabywalters
Will probably let user configure it in WA toolbelt
#
tantek
makes sense
#
barnabywalters
Got to go now, session buddies here :)

!tell barnabywalters In general for interactions that are fairly small and limited to just one or a few steps it's best to keep people on the original page if it's likely they'll still want to see that page. You'll see it in other bookmark, favorite, login, zoom, etc type actions. In a scenario where someone was reading an article, and wanted to email it to a friend, if that action could be accomplished through an overlay, drop down,
#
erinjo
popup, etc, I think in many cases it's preferred over navigating to a new page, and then having to navigate back to the article.
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell him that when I see him next
