waits for gwenbell to make an edit on the wiki ;)
#
gwenbell
aaronpk: are you playing around with node at all?
#
gwenbell
i'm looking through your bookmarks, we share a lot of interests - i ran across isotope through: http://facesofnyfw.com/
#
gwenbell
aaronpk: how does replies work with the little photos popping up?
#
gwenbell
I'm talking about this: http://aaronparecki.com/replies with Ken's face on the reply
#
aaronpk
ah that's a users.txt file I have on my server that maps usernames to name/domain/photo URL
#
gwenbell
Is it " permashortlinks back to originals on his own site" --> in other words, this is a working implementation of posse?
#
aaronpk
i plan to automate populating the file, but for now it's manual
#
gwenbell
ahh gotcha
#
aaronpk
yep my site is a POSSE implementation
#
gwenbell
aaronpk: so can your posse talk with, say, caseorganics?
#
gwenbell
like, can you cross-platform send/receive replies?
#
tantek
gwenbell - I think we're still figuring out the direct peer-to-peer indieweb interactions
#
tantek
though pingback and basing things on pingback seems promising
#
aaronpk
replies are an interesting problem. right now i'm receiving replies via pingback, but not sending them out yet.
#
tantek
whereas salmon has been too difficult to scale sustainably
#
tantek
and maintain etc.
#
gwenbell
tantek: i haven't played with salmon
#
aaronpk
don't :)
#
aaronpk
pingback is nice because it's a lightweight protocol and doesn't try to actually send reply data, it's just "hey this URL mentioned this other URL you might be interested in", then you can go look at what's at the other URL and parse it however you want, probably looking for microformats

the more research I do into the code of conduct thing the more interesting things I find, e.g. http://freethoughtblogs.com/greta/2012/06/14/sexual-harassment-and-the-opensf-conference-code-of-conduct/
#
bnvk
whoa
#
bnvk
on a totally unrelated (but on topic for this chan) note, checkout this project http://bnvk.me/zl8
#
tantek
bnvk - actually, no
#
tantek
the rel-logo / svg thing has been debunked a while ago
#
tantek
we already have both rel=icon and hCard for anything more structured
#
aaronpk
oh yea that made the rounds in 2011
#
tantek
requiring a particular format for a rel value is also a layer violation
#
tantek
aaronpk - was it that long ago? yikes.
#
aaronpk
late 2011 i think
#
tantek
bnvk: here you go, rejection documented: http://microformats.org/wiki/rejected-formats#Logo
#
aaronpk
p.s. that was the first place I checked :) I linked to that in the comment thread on hackernews too http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5197985
#
tantek
aaronpk - sad how profoundly uninformed the hackernews masses / comments are and how little the average person there tries to research anything
#
tantek
it's almost all about one-upmanship
#
aaronpk
that's a good analysis of it
#
tantek
not really much (if any) better than slashdot
#
tantek
this is why I find hackernews ignorable
#
tantek
would be interested to see a hackernews rebuild that required indieauth to sign-in and post
#
tantek
and frankly, required indieweb posts with pingback to hackernews in order to post
#
aaronpk
yea, I mostly skim the headlines (via IRC, ##hackernews on freenode) to keep a pulse on what's going on
#
aaronpk
tantek: that is an awesome idea!!
#
aaronpk
indienews
#
tantek
oh damn - just build it :)
#
aaronpk
i've already got the pingback part done, it has an API now that could be used to populate the stories :)
#
tantek
*and* the comments
#
aaronpk
hah totally
#
aaronpk
that would actually be a really useful tool for testing peoples' implementations of stuff as they're building it
#
tantek
that's my point. all posts, both original and comments can only be done by signing-in with indieauth and then posting something via pingback
#
aaronpk
wait why do you need to sign in at all then?
#
tantek
it's like, if you can't do that, you don't deserve to call yourself a hacker on the web :P
#
aaronpk
oh, upvotes?
#
tantek
(which I realize then applies to most (all?) of us still, since we don't have this all working end to end yet)
#
tantek
upvotes would probably be ok with just indieauth sign-in
#
aaronpk
end-to-end is the goal, but at least we've all built and are using various pieces
#
tantek
right
#
tantek
and if it resulted in a higher quality hackernews, it would trounce hackernews the same way that hackernews trounced digg
#
tantek
you could always POSSE out from indienews to hackernews and then ignore the hackernews commentary followups
