interesting thread on "owning your own words" on branch - from mid 2012 but not sure I've seen it before. http://branch.com/b/owning-your-own-words-is-it-important-1

Currently uploading a *lot* of #buzz audio to Soundcloud. I need to build #indieweb audio hosting. (http://waterpigs.co.uk/notes/863/)
#

tommorris - looks good!
#
tommorris
mostly, it's gonna be talking about how we (as in free culture projects) could not suck at publishing data such that indiewebsters can use it to build their own publishing platforms
#
barnabywalters
sounds great!

tommorris
is always in need of internet points.

tommorris: I’ve been testing out your /checkin/venue search a few times over the past few days
#
barnabywalters
is there any chance you could add in a map at the top of the search results showing the user’s current location? I’ve had some weird results and wasn’t sure if it was a GPS error or something on your/OSMs end
#
tommorris
barnabywalters: may just add a link to OSM centered on that point.
#
barnabywalters
tommorris: that would be really helpful for debugging
#
tommorris
barnabywalters: have you seen in the HTML? all the tags are in <!-- comments --> ;-)
#
barnabywalters
where is this data coming from?
#
tommorris
so, it comes from Cloudmade who are a commercial provider around OpenStreetMap
#
barnabywalters
heh, I typed in a random lat/long because my laptop won’t do geolocation, and it came out 300m from my grandparent’s house!
#
tommorris
getting OSM data directly is painful and computationally expensive to process

#
barnabywalters
but presumably they offer the service you’re using for free?
#
tommorris
while Cloudmade have a free-for-non-commercial-use POIs API
#
barnabywalters
tommorris: what about the Overpass API? Is that what you were using for osmcheckin?
#
tommorris
yeah, problem with Overpass it it's slow and gives you back a gigantic XML file which you have to parse into a location list
#
tommorris
Cloudmade API just gives you back simple JSON list of places. and you can specify the number of venues you want and a maximum distance around a point
#
barnabywalters
looks good. I’ll knock together a rough "checkin" implementation which offers a list from there and adds venue information to the note, the worry about storing my own copies later
#
tommorris
I'll dig out the API details in a sec
#
barnabywalters
the find?around endpoint looks ideal
#
tommorris
you can substitute .js for .html to see a map in your browser
#
barnabywalters
looks great!
#
tommorris
you should set a useful User-Agent for the call
#
Loqi
yea!
#
tommorris
personally, I'm ignoring anything which doesn't have a name, and I'm also excluding things that are amenity=post_box (because who wants to check into a post box)
#
barnabywalters
hm, doesn’t seem to do jsonp
#
barnabywalters
hah, or a phone box :)
#
tommorris
no JSONP, sadly. if you wanna do Ajax, you'll have to bounce it from a local server
#
ianloic
barnabywalters, superman?
#
tommorris
superman wouldn't be checking in with an indie4sq. ;-)
#
tommorris
too busy fighting crime and saving fair maidens from bad guys
#
barnabywalters
ianloic: tommorris: lol
#
ianloic
tommorris, what's the point if your followers don't know about it?
#
tantek
ianloic - any mobile device's GPS has too much lag for Superman anyway - all they would do is claim he's somewhere he was maybe seconds ago.

the cloudmade default profile photo is a bit creepy
#
tommorris
yes, weirdly creeptastic
#
tommorris
I've done 48 geocodes on my tommorris.org account.
#
barnabywalters
I’ve got a key but it doesn’t seem to work
#
tommorris
can take 10-20 minutes for the key to activate
#
barnabywalters
ah, fine now, it just took a few mins
