For all of you pissed off about Instagram, here is a radical idea: get your own website and put your pictures on there. #indiewebcamp

Loqi, page title and stuff?
#
Loqi
woot!
#
barnabywalters
tantek, remember when we were last discussing web actions, one of the problems was UI — where do we put the buttons whilst keeping the users in control, and all that?
#
barnabywalters
I’m extending aaronpk’s chrome extension to work not only on twitter, but on any website which uses a tweet button
#
barnabywalters
got the idea from one of caseorganic’s wiki pages — an idea about using AR to "reclaim" physical ad space with content the wearer would prefer
#
tantek
was that aaronpk's extension or was it Julien51's extension that he demoed at IndieWebCamp 2012 Portland?
#
tantek
The Butler or something like that
#
barnabywalters
I heard about the butler, never saw it
#
barnabywalters
I’m building off aaronpk’s extension
#
sandeepshetty
barnabywalters: Why not just do it as bookmarklets? will work in any browser
#
tantek
wondering if this butler type concept is worthy of documenting more in general on the wiki
#
aaronpk
sandeepshetty: if you're looking at twitter.com there are like 10 tweets. the extension rewrites the "reply" button of each. a bookmarklet would only work on an individual tweet page
#
barnabywalters
sandeepshetty: bookmarklets require manual activation — an extra button press. I am rebuilding the extension so it can be re-packaged as an extension for any browser, though
#
barnabywalters
aaronpk: surely not? an extension vs bookmarklet is just a different way of deploying the JS…?
#
aaronpk
what would happen if you click the bookmarklet?
#
barnabywalters
that would run the bindTwitter function, then you’d click the reply button
#
barnabywalters
hence the extra click
#
aaronpk
oh. that would work.
#
aaronpk
i don't think of bookmarklets that way
#
aaronpk
i use them to take a specific action immediately.
#
sandeepshetty
I way thinking about it in the same way... I think about bookmarklets modifying the page to suit my needs...
#
aaronpk
wow really? what are some other examples?
#
barnabywalters
hence not entirely suitable for this application
#
sandeepshetty
strip styles..
#
barnabywalters
inject fun games (asteroids and katamari damacy) into your HTML ;)
#
sandeepshetty
change font size, etc..
#
sandeepshetty
Can't find the link but the coolest one was where users could submit their own remix of a page that they regularly visit, e.g., slashdot, HN, etc..
#
sandeepshetty
barnabywalters: by "rebuilding the extension so it can be re-packaged as an extension for any browser" you mean you are abstracting out it's core form the browser dependent bits so it can be reused or something else?
#
barnabywalters
abstracting out the browser dependant bits
#
barnabywalters
but the priority is just to get it to work
#
barnabywalters
having trouble with twitter tweet buttons
#
barnabywalters
they are awkward
morrocco_mole joined the channel
#
tantek
yes, this is a problem with the current visual/interaction design of almost all web actions on actual web pages
#
barnabywalters
only way to get at the data is to parse the fragment ID of the src attribute of an iframe as if it were a query string :/
#
sandeepshetty
@tantek: What is?
#
tantek
they are awkward
#
sandeepshetty
barnabywalters: link to source of chrome extension?
#
barnabywalters
sandeepshetty: this is my fork of aaronpk’s original repo: https://github.com/barnabywalters/IndieWeb-Reply-Browser-Extension
#
tantek
sandeepshetty read the articles linked from this section: http://indiewebcamp.com/webactions#Drop_Social_Buttons
#

BTW, when did the wiki go from supporting openid to only indieauth?
#
sandeepshetty
I remember having logged in with openid the first I visited here..
#
tantek
depends on what your site has on it I think
#
aaronpk
when i launched the indieauth support I removed the openid plugin. I don't think MW lets you have multiple auth plugins
#
sandeepshetty
can't logging from my blog anymore.. at least the last few time I tried..
#
tantek
oh for some reason I thought indieauth also itself did openid support - did that change?
#
aaronpk
indieauth itself does, but i thought sandeepshetty meant something else
#
tantek
aaronpk - did you see my message about indieauth using an out of date version of the Google Auth APIs?
#
tantek
(from Sunday night PST)
#
aaronpk
oh yea! sad
#
aaronpk
i was on a plane
#
sandeepshetty
I meant just openid without indieauth...
#
tantek
sandeepshetty - why would you want that? indieauth is a superset
#
sandeepshetty
with my blog opneid just worked.. I remember making a few edits to the wiki.. but now I need to go mess around bloggers template interface and add some markup..
#
sandeepshetty
i.e., if I want to use my own domain to login..
#
tantek
should still work unless the openid support in indieauth is broken. aaronpk?
#
aaronpk
i don't remember the state of the openid support right now... i was having trouble with the omniauth openid plugin a while ago tho
#
aaronpk
i should check if there are any updates to that code
#
Loqi
definitely
#
sandeepshetty
"There was a problem! No rel="me" links were found on your website"
#
sandeepshetty
Thats the msg I get..
#
aaronpk
if openid support is enabled it should find the openid tags in the page
#
sandeepshetty
http://sandeep.shetty.in/ <link rel="openid.server" href="http://www.blogger.com/openid-server.g" /> <link rel="openid.delegate" href="http://sandeep.shetty.in/" />
#
aaronpk
ok, it may be disabled then
#
barnabywalters
yay! sorted out stupid twitter iframe fragment crap
#
Loqi
does a happy dance!
#
sandeepshetty
aaronpk: BTW, the chrome extension to rewrite the reply action is pretty cool. Extensions are also easier for regular users to install/use than bookmarlets I guess
#
aaronpk
hm, doesn't look like it's disabled in the code
#
sandeepshetty
Anything I can do to help debug?
#
aaronpk
have you done much ruby before?
morrocco_mole joined the channel
#
sandeepshetty
nope :) I meant making login attempts :D
#
aaronpk
ah darn
#
aaronpk
the way to debug is to run indieauth locally
#
aaronpk
i don't have time right now
#
barnabywalters
I made the tweet button hijacker work. If anyone is up for testing it out themselves I’d greatly appreciate it
#
sandeepshetty
Thats ok... let me know when you get around to it...
#
sandeepshetty
barnababywalters: is the target configurable?
#
sandeepshetty
how do I install it?
#
barnabywalters
sandeepshetty: it is *really* configurable ;) To install: clone https://github.com/barnabywalters/IndieWeb-Reply-Browser-Extension
#
barnabywalters
then, in chrome, navigate to chrome:extensions
#
aaronpk
barnabywalters: i just merged your PR :)
#
barnabywalters
aaronpk: expect some more soon :)
#
aaronpk
excellent
#
barnabywalters
sandeepshetty: after that, enable developer mode (top right)
#
barnabywalters
click Load Unpacked Extension, and navigate to the /chrome/ directory in the cloned repo
#
barnabywalters
then set it up via the extension options page, and try clicking on reply links on twitter.com and mysterious "post to your indieweb site" buttons on sites which should have twitter buttons ;)
#
sandeepshetty
barnabywalters: Works for me.
