that way, if I want to see previous releases, I simply pull up a list of all the tags, and all the releases are there with a date.

thanks tommorris - that's very helpful as a good practice for git based deployment

the thing to remember is that the tags are one-to-one. so, if you tag commit A with the tag 'production', then later tag commit B with it, it'll be lost from the first one. hence the date-based releases.

I don't usually deploy more than once a day, but if I did, I'd probably stick a sequential identifier afterwards. so it'd become 2012-11-15-a and 2012-11-15-b etc.
