considering using jekyll again for my site
#
aaronpk
it's a lot different than when I first looked at it
#
tantek
aaronpk - oh cool
#
tantek
any luck with the indieauth problem?
#
aaronpk
the openid glitch?
#
aaronpk
I couldn't figure it out the other day. I suspect a nonce/timing issue.
#
tantek
was repro on my site earlier
#
aaronpk
I also have an awesome idea for a better UX when logging in too
#
aaronpk
unfortunately it's going to require a major rearchitecting of the code
#
aaronpk
but it should end up being a better experience and also less prone to errors

I'm going to create regrets section like we had for last year
#
tantek
for folks that couldn't make it
#
tantek
odd about the openid thing - I'm still seeing "Internal Server Error"
#
aaronpk
can you do it one more time? i'll watch the logs
#
aaronpk
oh! wow... I found it
#
tantek
great! what was it?
#
aaronpk
really silly
#
aaronpk
it was trying to fetch your "aim:goim?screenname=tantekc" link
#
aaronpk
and I was only catching certain types of errors

Just drafting an article about web intents…
#
barnabywalters
much as I want them to exist, I can't help but think that the interface would be best left to the browser
#
barnabywalters
the current spec has us place intent buttons where we want to do what we want, which is just as open to abuse as the current social sharing button mess
#
barnabywalters
surely the browser should use MF or similar to figure out the content types on the page, then present UI configurable by the user to match which services they subscribe to?

@teejayvanslyke
@caseorganic Hi! So I'm coming to IndieWebCamp and would love to present on building microstartups.

barnabywalters: yes. definitely. all the "web intents" stuff is just talking about stuff that the User Agent should be doing
#
singpolyma
for example: bookmarking and sending a link via email are both things most User Agents support now
#
barnabywalters
sans service choice, of course
#
barnabywalters
Similar things could be provided inline, as well
#
barnabywalters
similar to OS X services — highlighted text offers a menu to share, hovering over an image offers a menu to share to whatever service
#
barnabywalters
something like twitter's @anywhere offers message/add to/whatever intents to inline @mentions of people and hcards
#
barnabywalters
it would all be quite straightforward to do for browser manufacturers. I don't know how simple it would be as an extension
#
singpolyma
barnabywalters: +1
#
singpolyma
in Firefox you could do it as an extension
#
tantek
@teejayvanslyke, what does a building a microstartup have to do with the indie web? Maybe that would be a better session for the #osbridge unconference/barcamp tomorrow at the Eliot Center? cc: caseorganic aaronpk

other browsers are less fully-integrated
#
barnabywalters
I know there is a web intents extension for chrome
#
barnabywalters
not sure exactly how feature-filled/production-ready it is
#
tantek
barnabywalters - I think they've focused on the wrong aspects of the problem
#
barnabywalters
ch, haven't seen that yet, reading…
#
barnabywalters
@erinjo's UI example is much nicer than mine, if less detailed and still contained within the webpage: http://www.flatfrogblog.com/2011/08/07/web-actions/
#
barnabywalters
good god, is there really a fax: URI scheme? That's hideous
#
barnabywalters
tantek: apart from immediate implementation, are there any significant benefits to sites providing their own web action CTAs?
#
barnabywalters
Unless they are somehow enforced and/or proxies to a native service, I would have thought they'll just cause inconsistencies
#
barnabywalters
or whatever else they choose
#
barnabywalters
as opposed to the user agent providing the interface, I meant
#
tantek
hard to answer in abstract - in general the only thing you can say is that sites having the freedom to decide their UI helps them provide a better specific experience than anything generic
#
tantek
the problem is we need more people experimenting with both
#
tantek
no amount of theoretical discussion will provide a good answer on this
#
barnabywalters
hopefully we might see a peak in interest at IWC?
#
tantek
and you won't be able to theoretically reason against one or the other
#
tantek
e.g. any reasoning like "any significant benefits to …" (as opposed to)
#
tantek
part of the point of IndieWebCamp is - we don't know - try it yourself on your *own site* - see how it feels to *you* on *your site* - get feedback from people you trust, iterate.
#
tantek
and avoid dictating design decisions to others that you yourself haven't tried
#
tantek
on your own site

sure — I've always found order from chaos provides excellent solutions
#
barnabywalters
It shouldn't be too tricky to make a browser extension that approximates what I've mocked up
#
@BarnabyWalters
Test post to Twitter from the Safari URI bar, RE #indieweb web actions
#
barnabywalters
the twitter:// uri scheme works on desktop safari as well as mobile safari
#
barnabywalters
so URI schemes are my path of least resistance to native client sharing
#
barnabywalters
no way to classify them, but that can be done manually
#
barnabywalters
Need to go shopping now :( Bye for the mo

aaronpk: is there anything at http://id.benatkin.com/ that should work with IndieAuth? says "No valid authentication providers were found at http://id.benatkin.com"
#
benatkin
aaronpk: I'm using benatkin.com with GitHub auth and it works now
#
benatkin
just something you might check to make it more robust
